Asian Cricket Council to decide new setup 2 June 2001
The Annual General Meeting of the Asian Cricket Council being held on June 20 in London will decide on new office- bearers and approve a new constitution. Zakir Hussain Syed, secretary of the ACC told Dawn Friday that it was now Bangladesh's turn to take charge of the council which has been in Pakistan's control since September 1999. Although when Pakistan were elected in Colombo, infighting within the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, led to a delay in transfer of funds which were eventually released in February 2000. Because of this Pakistan could not operate in the period before February. And realistically Pakistan's tenure should go till 2002. However Zakir dismissed the notion that Pakistan were too keen to stay at the helm. "We have no objection whatsoever to the power being transferred," he said. Lt. Gen Tauqir Zia is the current president of the ACC and will chair the London meeting in which the new constitution, said to be in line with that of a modern organisation, will be approved. Other items on the agenda include the approval of the next budget (April 2001 to March 2002) and the affiliation of Bhutan, Bahrain, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and Azerbijan. Zakir said that their affiliation was subject to fulfilment of constitutional provisions but added that it was good to see that such countries were coming ahead enthusiastically. A meeting of the Asian Cricket Foundation is also being held in London on June 16 which will be presided over by its chairman Jagmohan Dalmiya. © Dawn Source: Dawn Editorial comments can be sent to Dawn at webmaster@dawn.com |
