Havant regain top spot as title contenders both win Mike Vimpany - 30 July 2001
Havant are back at the top of the Southern Electric ECB Premier League after winning by 62 runs at Bashley (Rydal). But overnight leaders BAT Sports are clinging on to their shirt-tails after a six-wicket win over relegation troubled Hungerford. Bournemouth held the upper hand for long periods of their visit to Andover, but eventually had to settle for a draw, while Burridge's last pair held out for a share of the spoils at South Wilts. Havant's visit to Bashley was in the balance for long periods, particularly after Hampshire's Andy Sexton had given the New Forest club a flying start. Havant's 256-7, built around Dominic Carson (63), Richard Hindley (52), Shawn Gillies (39), Luke Sears (28) and Paul Gover (28 not out) did not look enough as Sexton opened up. The county 2nd XI left-hander took the game to Havant with a flourishing knock. The nagging off-spin of Hindley (6-48) created inroads, but it was not until the closing stages that the initiative was wrested from Bashley and champions Havant got on top. Bashley were eventually dismissed for 194, giving Havant a handy maximum 25-point haul. Predictably, BAT had it easy enough, overhauling Hungerford's 173 to win by six wickets, but their 20-point haul could not keep them on top. Chris Ward (36) and Danny Williams (23) gave Hungerford a positive start, while Welsh all-rounder Owen Dawkins (55) gave the innings extra impetus. But, on a turning pitch, Richard Dibden (5-60) and Dave Carson (3-31) called the tune - the visitors tumbling to 173 all out. Damian Shirazi (46) and Richard Kenway (29) got BAT off to a 67-run start, but it was Carson's 49 not out which sealed a six-wicket win. Calmore Sports, who play BAT in the final match of the season on September 1, could finish third. Liphook & Ripsley's 213-6 (James Hibberd 4-60) was never enough on a Loperwood Park shirtfront - Paul Draper (72 not out) and Jez Goode (63) securing a six-wicket win for the Totton club. Teenage Dorset wicketkeeper Chris Park equalled his personal best 92 as Bournemouth totted up 235-5 at Andover. Julian Cassell (29), Geoff Warrington (29), Mike Wilkinson (21) and Matt Swarbrick (20) all chipped in before a generous declaration set Andover a gettable target. Although Roger Miller (48) did well, Andover slipped to 110-5 against the left-arm spin of Tom Webley (3-47). The situation left Jerry Hayward (52 not out) with little option but to play out for a draw at 175-5. Last pair Matt Godwin and Steve Williams denied South Wilts victory at Lower Bemerton - Burridge eventually hanging on at 216-9 after the Salisbury club had posted 235. Simon Creal (50), Dave Jackson (47) and Neil Cunningham (34) top scored, but the Burridge players found the task demanding in the light of the death of their long-standing clubmate George Winkles earlier in the day. South Wilts' 235 was based around Russell Rowe's 75 and supporting knocks from Jamie Glasson (47), John Williams (32) and Tim Lamb (28). Spin duo Matt Godwin (5-71) and Paul Ancell (4-61) bowled effectively for Burridge. © SEPL / Mike Vimpany / Daily Echo
