Rod Marsh, the Head Coach of the Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy, a program of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) has resigned to take up a position with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as Director of its new National Cricket Academy.
Marsh, the former Australian Test wicket-keeper has overseen the development of the country's best young cricketers since 1990. Throughout that time the Academy, under the guidance of Marsh has helped launch the international career of 27 Australian players including Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist.
"It has been a genuine honour to have worked in this role for the past decade," Mr Marsh said.
"Watching young cricketers develop and reach new heights is very exciting, and to know that the Academy has played a part in that development is perhaps the most rewarding part of the job," he said.
"I will be leaving Australian cricket on good terms, and will always follow the careers of the boys who have attended the Academy very closely. However with time comes new challenges, and I feel the opportunity to help another cricketing nation establish a similar program is very exciting."
The Director of the AIS, Michael Scott said he was sad to see Marsh leave the program but was grateful for his contribution, which sees the Academy internationally recognised as a world best practice model for elite cricket development.
"The Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy, which was established in 1987 as a joint initiative between the AIS and the ACB is clearly regarded as the world's best cricket development program," Mr Scott said.
In response to the announcement, Chief Executive Officer of the ACB James Sutherland said;
"Naturally we are very disappointed to be losing Rod to Australian cricket. His contribution to the game in this country has been immense, both on the field as a champion wicket-keeper, and off it as the leading figure in elite cricket development.
"Rod has done a terrific job in preparing Australia's best young cricketers for careers at the first-class level."
"Although in an ideal world Rod would have remained with the Academy, we accept his decision and wish him luck in the new role. He leaves with our sincere thanks for his outstanding work." Mr Sutherland said.
The ACB and the AIS will use Marsh's departure as an opportunity to find an applicant capable of building on the solid foundations put in place at the Academy.
"With Rod's departure, there is now an opportunity for Australian cricket to identify a person with the necessary skills to build on the current program and capacity to take the Academy to a new level." Mr Sutherland said.
The AIS and the ACB have initiated a recruitment process to appoint a new head coach for the Academy with the position expected to attract a number of high quality candidates.
