Somerset Under-19's enjoy mixed fortunes
Richard Walsh - 28 July 2001

Somerset Under-19's enjoyed mixed fortunes in their two matches last week.

Against Gloucestershire at Bristol, Somerset batted first and were given a wonderful start by openers Luke Stokes and Tom Webley. The pair put on 151 for the first wicket before Webley was out for 46.

Seventeen year old Stokes scored 104 in the first session, before he was eventually dismissed for 123. Sadly the rest of the innings disappointed and Somerset were all out for 268.

In reply Gloucestershire had reached 291 for 7 by the end of the two day match and won on first innings. For Somerset Gareth Andrew took 3 for 48 and Michael Coles 3 for 46.

In their second game at Northampton, Somerset had to settle for a draw. On a flat track they again batted first and Stokes continued his run of good form by notching up another century before lunch. There was also an unbeaten 110 for Andrew and 64 from Coles before Somerset declared on 401 for 8.

By the end of the match Northants had scored 323 for 5, with Matthew Gitsham taking 2 for 77 in his 30 overs.

The Under-19s entertain Worcestershire at Lansdown Cricket Club on Monday and Tuesday next week, and then return to Taunton School on Thursday and Friday to take on Warwickshire.
