- Mike Atherton (in second innings) completed his 1000 runs in his 16th
match against Australia. He became 13th Englishman to accomplish this
feat. Others to do so for England are Geoff Boycott (1549 runs in 19
matches), Graham Gooch (1543 in 25),David Gower (1445 in 18),Stanley
Jackson (1415 in 20), John Edrich (1361 in 17), Len Hutton (1258 in
12),Herbert Sutcliffe (1212 in 13),Jack Hobbs (1143 in 17),Denis
Compton (1139 in 15), Mike Gatting (1073 in 16),Ken Barrington (1065
in 13) and Alan Knott (1039 in 21).
- England has now lost 20 matches under Atherton's captaincy- the second
worst performance by any captain in Test cricket. Australia's Allan
Border holds the dubious distinction of losing most matches, however
he had won 32 matches for his country as against Atherton's 13.
Atherton ,in the meantime, went past the tally of India's Nawab of
Pataudi (Sen.) and Sri Lankan Arjuna Ranatunga who had 19 losses to
their name.
- The catch of Darren Gough in second innings off the bowling of Jason
Gillespie was 158th for Mark Waugh in his 113th match- maximum by any
fielder in Test cricket. He surpassed former team mate Mark Taylor's
tally of 157 catches (from 104 matches). Taylor had reached the
fielding pinnacle in January 1999 when he caught Mark Ramprakash off
the bowling of Glenn McGrath at Sydney Test match. The following table

- Australia has now played 20 matches at a stretch without a draw
winning 18 and losing only 2- a new record for Australia. This
bettered the previous sequence of 19 consecutive matches without a
draw which Australia had from 1884-85 (v England,Adelaide) to 1891-92
(v England,Adelaide). Australia is now inching towards England's
alltime record of most consecutive matches without a draw. England had
a run of 22 consecutive result oriented matches from 1884-85 to
1891-92 which included 17 wins and 5 losses.
- Steve Waugh has now appeared in 64 matches which Australia eventually
won – most by any player in Test history. He surpassed the tally of
Viv Richards who have appeared in 63 `won' matches for West Indies.
- The Man of Match award was ninth for Glenn McGrath in his Test career.
