Skipper Wells steers Leicestershire home
Dave Bracegirdle - 12 July 2001

Leicestershire were made to wait by the weather before wrapping up a comfortable six-wicket victory over Notts to earn a quarter-final tie away against Worcestershire.

Resuming at 125-3 and requiring just a further 52 runs from 20 overs, the overnight pairing of Vince Wells and Ben Smith were parted in just the second over of the morning.

Smith, who had moved on to 27, tried to work Richard Logan to leg but saw the ball balloon up off an outside edge and Greg Blewett dived forward from point to hold a spectacular catch.

Darren Maddy joined his captain at the crease and held a watching brief for a while as the runs dried up. Wells then nudged a couple of quick singles to register the first half-century of the match (150 mins 94 balls 6x4s).

Having been at the crease for six overs without scoring Maddy then hoisted AJ Harris for successive mid-wicket boundaries to bring the Foxes to within 30 runs of their target.

The first day had been continually interrupted by squally showers and the first of the morning drove the players off with the score on 157-4.

After a 40-minute delay play resumed in bright sunshine and Maddy's slog sweep for four off Greg Blewett indicated that there would be no way back for Notts.

Kevin Pietersen was given his first bowl of the match – but wished he hadn't as Maddy hit his first two deliveries for four then six.

The end came quickly for Notts after that as Leicestershire triumphed with 7.5 overs to spare.

Vince Wells was deservedly named man of the match and while his side can look forward to the next round with confidence Notts were left to reflect on their first one-day defeat at Trent Bridge since 1 August last year.
