Jason Lewry took the second hat-trick of his career on the way to a career-best match return of 13-79 as Sussex routed Hampshire by an innings and 113 runs to go second in Division Two of the CricInfo Championship.

The left-armer removed Derek Kenway, Will Kendall and Robin Smith in the first over of Hampshire's second innings.

And he got in on the act again in the 15th over by taking three more wickets in four balls when he had Neil Johnson caught behind, Adrian Aymes trapped in front by a yorker and Alex Morris bowled to reduce Hampshire to 42-8.

Lewry's other victim was Dimitri Mascerenhas which gave him figures of 7-42 to go with the 6-37 he took in the first innings.

At one stage he had taken seven Hampshire wickets in 11 balls after wrapping up the first innings with four in eight deliveries yesterday.

Shaun Udal (40 not out) delayed the inevitable, but James Kirtley and Billy Taylor took a wicket each at the end to finish off Hampshire for just 108.

Earlier Sussex had extended their first innings from an overnight 220-7 to 302 all out.

Left-hander Michael Yardy finished with a career-best 87 not out after putting on 66 for the last wicket with Billy Taylor.

But this was Lewry's day, although he admitted he needed persuading to keep bowling after lunch.

"Three or four overs before Shaun came in I could hardly put one foot in front of another, I was dead on my feet," he said.

"So to take another four wickets like that after getting a hat-trick was really special. The conditions were ideal for swing bowling and when it's your day you have to try and make the most of it."

Sussex now move above Hampshire into second place in the table after recording their fourth win in the last five Championship games.
