Uganda, Namibia maintain winning spree Latafat Ali Siddiqui - 6 July 2001
Uganda and Namibia boosted their hopes of advancing to the playoff round of the 2001 ICC Trophy with impressive victories here Wednesday. Heavy showers and violent thunderstorms hit the Toronto area at midday Wednesday, forcing players off the grounds and the ICC officials were left with no option but to revise victory targets under the Duckworth/Lewis method at all five venues. In Group 'A' of Division Two, Namibia scored an emphatic 179-run victory over Gibraltar at Ross Lord ground. The win, their fourth in a row, placed them on top of the points table with maximum eight points. Similarly, Uganda stayed on top of the table of Group 'B' in Division Two with fourth successive victories. On Wednesday, Uganda defeated France by 86 runs. In the day's most exciting match at Eglinton Flats grounds, Argentina grabbed a five-wicket victory over Malaysia who lost the game after scoring 240 runs for six. R. Madhavan slammed a flawless unbeaten century. He hit nine boundaries in his 125-ball knock of 105. Argentina built their innings through Pablo Ferguson (67) and Marias Paterlini (66) who shared a third-wicket partnership of 110. At Ajax, East and Central Africa registered their maiden win of the tournament with a 65-run triumph over Israel. © Dawn
