Barbados defending proud record

Barbados' cricketers have a proud record to uphold in their Busta Series match against England 'A', starting at Kensington Oval today.

Barbados haven't lost to any England team in a first-class match since 1954 when the touring MCC beat them by one wicket on a scrambled leg-bye.

Their only other loss to English opponents in the 20th century was by 177 runs to a team led by Lord Brackley in 1905 - and they made up for that by winning the return match by ten wickets.

England teams, private or official, have played against Barbados at Kensington since the Middlesex player, R. Slade Lucas, brought the first touring team to the Caribbean in 1895. It won the first match by five wickets, lost the second by 28 runs.

The record over the 106 years is 33 played against 22 separate teams; Barbados won 15, England teams six, with 12 drawn.

The last three matches - in 1990, 1994 and 1998 - have ended in draws. The last to produce a result was in 1986 when Barbados, led by Joel Garner, beat David Gower's team by three wickets.

1905: Lord Brackley's team - Barbados lost by 177 runs; won by ten wickets.
