Water College Report
CN Whitaker - 26 January 2001

The College has a very enthusiastic young team this season with exciting prospects ahead. Besides captain Tim Hopgood, vice-captain Brendon McCay, top batsman Peter Tarr and wicket-taking spin bowler Barry Heath, who were regular first-team players last season, all other team members are new to this level of the game.

The team has tremendous bowling potential. Heath's highlights include five wickets for 34 runs against Churchill High School last season and four for 44 against Jameson High School last Saturday (20/01/01) in the first game of this season. Other bowlers expected to deliver wickets include fast bowlers McCay, Guy Speedie and Craig Wintersgill. Opposition strikers can also expect to be troubled by unpredictable spin from Robert Turner and captain Hopgood.

Much work is going into improving the team's batting performance which last season too often leaned towards undisciplined impatience for runs and boundaries; all too often resulting in wickets falling unnecessarily out caught! Tarr is currently the leading batsman; he scored a brisk 62 runs in nine overs with nine boundaries and two sixes against Jameson last weekend.

Results of last weekend's games versus Jameson:

1st team lost by six wickets.
2nd team won by 17 runs.
16A won by six wickets.
15A won by nine wickets.

Our programme for the next five weeks includes games against Eaglesvale (27.01.01), Churchill (10.02.01) and Hillcrest (17-02-01).
