Redbacks Under-17 team win national championships
South Australian Cricket Association - 15 January 2001
The Redbacks Under 17 team has outplayed all other states to win the Under
17 National Championships in Brisbane.
Over the 2 weeks of the competition the Redbacks defeated Victoria, NSW and
WA in lead up matches.
In the final against NSW the Redbacks batted first and made an impressive
483, Cameron Borgas top scoring with 149, Tom Plant 124, Callum Ferguson 80
and Nick Kurzel 61.
At the end of play on the second day NSW were 5 for 200, with the game
ending in a draw. The Redbacks finished top of the table on points and were
declared National Champions.
Four South Australians, Cameron Borgas, Callum Ferguson, Mark Cosgrove and
Matthew Burr were named in the Under 17 Australian team. South Australian
Captain Cameron Borgas was also named Player of the Carnival.
Illustrating the depth in South Australian junior cricket at present, five
players in the victorious Under 17 team also played in the Redbacks Under 19
squad which reached the semi finals in the National Under 19 Championships
in Hobart late last year.
Former state cricketers Dean Sayers coached the victorious Redbacks side.
