ACB Stephen Waugh to sit out two Carlton series matches
Australian Cricket Board - 14 January 2001

Australian captain Stephen Waugh will miss the next two Carlton Series matches, against the West Indies (17 January in Sydney) and Zimbabwe (21 January in Melbourne), after sustaining a minor groin strain.

Waugh underwent a scan after being ruled out of the Carlton Series match against the West Indies at The Gabba on Sunday.

It confirmed no significant problem, but nevertheless, it was decided that he should miss the next two matches as a precautionary measure.

Waugh will depart the squad on Monday when it arrives in Sydney and he is expected to return when it meets up again for the second half of group matches in the Carlton Series in Adelaide on 24 January.

It is hoped to name a replacement player as soon as possible and a formal announcement on the Australian captaincy and vice-captaincy for the next two Carlton Series matches will be made in due course.

Stephen Waugh said: "It's obviously frustrating to miss any cricket, but I felt a niggle in my groin over the weekend and it has to be best to just miss a couple of matches now rather than trying to play and risking a more serious problem as a result."

"We are keen to employ a policy rotating the batsmen and bowlers during the Carlton Series and this enforced lay-off can serve as my rest period."
