State Insurance Cup starts this weekend New Zealand Cricket - 11 January 2001
The State Insurance Cup, New Zealand Cricket's inter-provincial competition for women cricketers, gets underway this weekend. The competition will be followed with great interest after the tremendous win by the CLEAR White Ferns in the CricInfo Women's World Cup played in New Zealand throughout December. Three of the victorious CLEAR White Ferns will not be playing in the State Insurance Cup. Debbie Hockley, Catherine Campbell and Katrina Keenan will all be missing from the Canterbury team as all had indicated earlier in the season that they would be having a break after the World Cup. However in an exiting development to the State Insurance Cup two overseas players will be participating in the competition having stayed in New Zealand after the CricInfo Women's World Cup. Clare Taylor, the right arm pace bowler from England will play for the State Otago Sparks and will form part of an international opening attack with CLEAR White Fern Rachel Pullar. In the CricInfo Women's World Cup Taylor took 14 wickets at an average of 10.85 and an economy rate of 2.37. Charlotte Edwards, also from England, will open the batting for State Northern Districts. Edwards, in four World Cup matches, scored a total of 157 runs at an average of 52.33 and a strike rate of 71.68. The first round in the home and away national league has State Northern Districts hosting State Central Districts at WestpacTrust Park, Hamilton on Saturday and Sunday for two one-day games, while the State Otago Sparks host State Auckland Hearts at University Oval, Dunedin. On Monday and Tuesday State Northern Districts hosts State Wellington at WestpacTrust Park, Hamilton and Canterbury hosts State Auckland Hearts at the Village Green, QEII, Christchurch. Otago will continue to draft players from Canterbury, while Northern Districts will draft players from Auckland. Each team plays ten Cup games with the competition culminating in a final on 10 February at the home venue of the top qualifier. State Auckland Hearts will be trying to win back-to-back State Insurance Cup titles after successfully taking the trophy off Canterbury last season. State Auckland Hearts has obtained the services of CLEAR White Fern Helen Watson who is living in Auckland and welcomes back CLEAR White Fern off-spinner Clare Nicholson who missed last season with injury. CLEAR White Ferns Kathryn Ramel, Emily Drumm, and Rebecca Rolls should be major contributors. Wally Stamp is coach of the State Auckland Hearts. State Northern Districts are an exciting young team. Boosted by England international Charlotte Edwards and a pre-season trip to Australia, State Northern Districts will be looking to build on their introduction to the competition last season. The side will be coached by former Northern Districts player Cliff Dickison. State Central Districts will rely heavily on CLEAR White Ferns Erin McDonald and Emily Travers. The team will also be boosted by the return of former international Donna Trow and will again be captained by Megan Graham. The coach is former Central Districts off-spinner Paul Unwin. Much of State Wellington's success will depend on the batting of Anna O'Leary who had a superb World Cup, the bowling of Jane Hunter Siu and the allround skills of Francis King. Anna O'Leary takes over the captaincy from Maia Lewis and former international Julie Harris will coach Wellington. Canterbury has lost the services of CLEAR White Ferns Debbie Hockley, Catherine Campbell and Katrina Keenan who have opted for a break following the CricInfo Women's World Cup. Lisa Astle will captain Canterbury and there are several new caps - Maria Fahey, Selena Charteris, Fiona Fraser and Sarah Burke who were all members of the winning Canterbury under 21 team. The team is coached by Lindsay Thorn. State Otago Sparks will be coached by former Pakistan batsman Billy Ibadulla. CLEAR White Fern Rachel Pullar will be a key member of the State Otago Sparks as an allrounder and the continued development of promising young players Megan Kane, Elizabeth Scurr and Kirsten Spence will be watched with interest. © New Zealand Cricket
