Sir Everton now on 76 not out 28 February 2001
One of Barbados' celebrated cricket sons celebrated his 76th birthday with mixed emotions on Monday. Sir Everton Weekes, one of the legendary 3Ws, was toasted by Barbados Cricket Association officials during the lunch interval of the fourth and final day of the Busta International Shield semifinal between Barbados and Jamaica. "I was touched by the occasion. It has never happened at the Oval before and I wonder why. Seventy-six is not a number that you often talk about," Sir Everton said. "I am getting a little more tired than when I was 75," he said with a laugh. "But I am very thankful. The Almighty has been good to me and I will remain very humble." Sir Everton, who started the day with his daily swim and five-mile walk at the beach, however, could not remain at Kensington for the entire day's play. He left just after lunch to go to the Holy Trinity Church, in St. Philip to attend the funeral of the late Clyde Beckles, another former Barbados player, who died in London on February 15.
