Foundation CC (1) leads the field in Lagos at half way stage
Tony Munro - 22 February 2001

The Lagos League is at the halfway mark, with most clubs having played five out of the nine matches they are scheduled to play in this first session of the programme. Subsequently the first four placed teams will go into a 'Super 4' round-robin playoff wherein the first two teams that emerge from that format will play the final match of the Series.

At the moment, leading the pack are the Champions FCC1 with 193 points from six matches, while Cosmo are in 2nd place with 189 points from seven matches. In third place is GCI Old Boys, the only team with a 100% record so far with 162 points from five matches, while FCC2 is in fourth place with 139 points from six matches.

At this stage it seems most likely that these four teams will graduate to the "Super 4" format. New entrants FGC and Howzat Dolphins bring up the rear in 9th and 10th place respectively; however FGC has recorded its first victory in the league beating Howzat Dolphins.

King's College Old Boys title challenge seems to have fizzled out before it got started and they lie 8th in the league having won just a single match out of the five played by them.

In terms of individual performances, there have been some encouraging displays with both bat and ball. Leading the batting averages is Dolapo Gaffar(FCC1) with 53.80 having amassed 269 runs from 6 innings featured with a personal best of 79 runs; following closely with an average of 50.67 is Wale Adeoye(FCC1) from 5 innings with 70 as his highest score so far but amassing 152 runs, Oboh Omoigui(Cosmo) has 41 from 5 innings with a personal best of 84 this season out of the total of 164 cumulative runs scored by him. Kwesi Sagoe(FCC2) has amassed a total of 159 runs from his 5 innings with a personal best of 54 runs and an average of 39.75; while Dotun Olatunji(FCC1) has a total of 237 runs from 6 innings with a highest score of 54 and an average of 39.50.

In the bowling department Bayo Thompson and Oboh Omoigui both of Cosmo lead the wicket haul with 18 wickets apiece; while Thompson picked up his wickets at an average of 6.72 runs from 45 overs, Omoigui accounted for his at 8.83runs from 42.4 overs. Young Joshua Ogunlola(FCC2) is keeping up the hunt with 17 wickets at an average of 12.23 from 43.9 overs in his first season in the Lagos League. Tony Ovie-Whiskey(KC) comes in next with 15 wickets at an average of 10.26 from37.2 overs bowled; while Tayo Okusanya(GCI) has 12 wickets at an average of 9 from 38 overs bowled.

GCI Old Boys are looking good with their blend of experience in old war horses Seye Fadahunsi and Okon Ukpong both ex internationals with Ukpong having the honour of captaining the Nigerian team previously. They are ably complemented by current internationals in Dapo Adegoke, Tayo Okusanya, Charles Okodua, Tayo Atoloye, Taiwo Odeniyi and Yemi Adegbola.

The champions FCC1 look in good nick with sterling batting performances from current internationals Wale Adeoye and Dotun Olatunji with Dolapo Gaffar and Sunkanmi Odedele also chipping in valuable runs. Experienced cover is provided by ex-internationals Gbenga Akinyombo, Kofi Sagoe, George Wiltshire, and Dipo Idowu. Former club skipper Ed Akerele is back on the pitch after a long absence and with the current skipper Sam Akhionbare are expected to strategise to deliver the championship once again.

Cosmo have recovered from an indifferent start to their season and are firing on all cylinders especially with the fiery attack of Bayo Thompson and Oboh Omoigui the league's leading wicket takers; they also have the guile of Okey Ahuchogu to deploy when there is a need to slow things down. Top order batsman Femi Olayiwole is also back after some absence and will solidify the team's performance.
