Gooch and Border to star for Masters Notts CCC Media Release - 22 February 2001
ENGLAND and Australia's most prolific Test run scorers of all time will go head to head once again as captain's of the Masters teams battling it out at Trent Bridge's Weekend of Legends. Graham Gooch and Allan Border have confirmed they will resume their old rivalry on the field for the one-off game on the second day of Nottinghamshire's Weekend of Legends. The match on July 1 gives cricket fans a rare chance to see the two great batsmen, who between them have more than 20,000 Test runs, in action once more on the famous old ground. Said Gooch: "Trent Bridge is one of the most popular venues among cricketers and with the recent redevelopment, continues to be one of the premier grounds in the country. "It will be great to have the opportunity to play there again and to cross swords with some of our old foes from Australia. "We've taken a lot of beatings in recent times and I think it's high time to pay them back. I'm sure the game will be played in the right spirit but like in any England v Australia game there's bound to be a real competitive edge there. "I certainly won't be taking the game lightly and will be looking to play some practice games beforehand. "While I plan to enjoy myself and am sure everyone will have a great day, we're expecting a big crowd and want to keep them entertained with some decent cricket." Gooch will no doubt be hoping for a repeat of the last time he batted against an Australian team captained by Border at Trent Bridge - the third Ashes Test in 1993 - when he smashed 120 in the second innings. "To get a century in the game in July would be beyond my wildest dreams but it's nice to have the chance," he added. But he will face a strong Australian team including: David Boon, Merv Hughes, Tim May, Ian Healy, Mark Taylor, Geoff Lawson and Craig McDermott. The two former Test skippers will take to the field on the Sunday of the weekend, following on from current world stars who, in teams managed by Notts legends Sir Garfield Sobers and Sir Richard Hadlee, will compete on the previous day. Already confirmed for this game are giants of the world game including; Shoaib Akthar, Shaun Pollock, Saeed Anwar, Lance Klusener and Jonty Rhodes. Tickets for the Masters game are available from just £10 for adults and discounts are available for those attending both days. Call 0115 982 3000 for details.
