The Barbados Nation WI Local: Choose wisely, youth urged
11 February 2001

The victorious members of the Garrison Secondary School's cricket teams have been warned that a professional career in cricket could change their lives for better or worse, but they would have to choose wisely. This was the advice from Erskine King, director of the National Sports Council (NSC), at the 2000 Cricket Awards Ceremony at the school on Thursday.

"I hope some of you go on to the Barbados and West Indies teams and help those of us around the region and the world to sleep comfortably and wake up with a smile when the West Indies are playing across the world," King said.

"You will be exposed to positive and negative things, but you must decide which way you want to go."

King told the cricketers to adopt virtues of perseverance, dignity, wisdom, patience, and kindness, among others, which would not only help with cricket but all areas of personal growth.

The Garrison teams have performed well against the odds, winning the Goddard's Schools' Division 2 and reaching the semi-finals of the BET Under-15 Cricket Competition despite not having a playing field. They use the grounds at Bayville, YMPC, Banks and HM Prisons.

Praise was also heaped on Elvis Howard who is in charge of cricket.

The Cricketer of The Year was Daley Hurley who played in three divisions, claiming 48 wickets in the Under-15, 44 in Division 2, and 16 in the Under-19. He was also named Most Valuable Player in the first two competitions.

Rhodan Morris also had a good season with 226 runs in the Under-15 Division, while Jason Codrington scored 203 runs in Division 2.

The Most Improved Player in Division 2 was Jude Clarke, while Julian Phillips was the Most Improved at Under-15.

Shamar Cooke had a best score of 86 runs at Under-13 level, while Simeon Perryman had 12 wickets. The Most Improved Player at that level was Ishmael Rudder.
