Muralitharan available to play for Lancashire in 2001 Staff and agencies - 9 February 2001
Lancashire today received a tremendous boost for the coming season with the news that Muttiah Muralitharan will be free to play for the county for much of the season. Lancashire have had the off spinner under contract for the 2001 season but have needed the Sri Lankan board's approval. "This is the news we have been waiting for," said Lancashire chief executive Jim Cumbes. Although he may not be available for the opening game at Taunton on 20 April, Muralitharan will definitely be free to play five days later against county champions Surrey at Old Trafford. However, he is likely to miss about six weeks of the county's fixtures in the middle of the season when Sri Lanka play three test matches against India and a triangular series with India and New Zealand. When Muralitharan played for Lancashire in 1999, he took 66 wickets in six matches.
