Fans to pay more for Test 8 February 2001
Barbadians will have to fork out a few more dollars to attend next month's Kensington Oval Test match between West Indies and South Africa. There have been increases in prices of daily tickets for each of the seven stands, with the exception of the Greenidge & Haynes Stand and the lower level of the Mitchie Hewitt Stand. Most of the increases are $5 increments. Season tickets, with the exception of the Garfield Sobers Pavilion and the Greenidge & Haynes Stand have gone up. Increases range from $5 to $15. Additionally, there is a change in the pricing structure for the March 29 to April 2 Test match. While last season's Test against Pakistan featured higher prices for the first three days (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and lower prices for the last two days (Sunday and Monday), the South Africa Test will have lower prices for the first, second and fifth days (Thursday, Friday and Monday) and higher prices for the third and fourth days (Saturday and Sunday). Case in point: daily tickets for the Kensington Stand for the first, second and fifth days for South Africa Test will cost $25, while tickets for the third and fourth days will cost $35. Last year, those tickets for the first three days were sold at $30 for the first three days and $20 for the last two. West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chief executive officer Gregory Shillingford said the new pricing system had been arrived at following discussions involving the board's marketing department, territorial boards and series sponsors Cable & Wireless. 'I have heard arguments and proposals to arrive at the strategy to be able to fill the grounds - not necessarily to have a big price only as the mechanism to earn income,' Shillingford told Nationsport. 'It is possible that some stands may be accruing these higher prices, but I know that the objective is to get as high as occupancy as possible.' While prices for the Barbados Test for most stands have gone up, there have been decreases in at least one stand. Last year, daily tickets for the upper level of the Greenidge & Haynes Stand were sold at $55 and $45 respectively. This year, the prices for that stand are $50 and $40. There is a similar reduction for the lower level of the stand. The prices of daily tickets for the lower level of the Mitchie Hewitt Stand have remained the same.
