Eastern Province Cricket appoints new Northern Areas Youth Coach. Ronel Dawson - 5 February 2001
A dynamic young EP cricketer with more than enough playing experience, Chris Esau, has been appointed by the EP Cricket Board as the Northern Area Youth Coach. Esau, who was Assistant Coach at the Lennons EP Cricket Academy last year, says he is extremely happy about the opportunity that he has been given. "I'm looking forward to this year and I'm sure it will be a challenging experience. So far, everything has been going very well, although I have only been in the office for three weeks. But I have to lay the foundation now to ensure that everything will run smoothly for the rest of the year." Esau's main responsibilities will be to identify future EP players from the Northern Areas and to make sure that these identified players receive the same opportunities as the more privileged players. According to Russell Doming, EP Cricket: Youth Cricket Manager, Esau will be working closely with the EP Development Committee in the Northern Area, in making sure that cricket is played at every school. "I've got great expectations about what he's going to accomplish this year. Esau has great credibility in the Northern Areas. People trust and like him and with his sound knowledge of the game he will be an inspiration to many young cricketers in the Northern Areas. "He studied for a Sport Administration and Marketing diploma at the PE Technikon. His knowledge of cricket administration, will stand him in good stead for this demanding job. He is still very young and full of confidence. Although he's only been working for 3 weeks now, one can already see the direction cricket in the Northern Areas will take." Esau, who is only 22 years old, is a qualified Level 3 coach and a member of the EP B side. "I played in the Premier League for Technikon, but am now playing for Pollocks Club. I played for the SA Technikon side for two years, played in the first team at Grey High School, EP u/19 for two years and EP u/15." "I'm very excited about the chance I have to learn from the likes of Russell Domingo and Adrian Birrell."
