Pradeep Hewage warmed up for England's first practice game tomorrow with a marathon double century for Nondesripts Cricket Club at Maitland Place today. The compact right-hander, who will captain the BCCSL Colts XI in a two-day game at Moratuwa, guided Nondescripts to a first innings victory against Panadura Sports Club.
His undefeated 200 from 424 balls was the highest Premier League score of the season and included 22 boundaries. When Hewage eventually reached his personal milestone, NCC declared on 413 in reply to Panadura's 305. RR Tissera also chipped in with 53 from 150 balls in an opening stand worth 137 runs. In their second innings, Pandura raced to 68 for two at the close thanks to a 45 ball half century from LPC Silva.
However, in spite the heroics of Hewage, NCC lost their top of the table position to the Sinhalese Sports Club, who secured an outright victory against the Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club. Although obviously delighted with their 147 run victory the SSC will be perturbed by a calamitous performance in their second innings.
Starting the day on 55 for two the SSC lost their last eight wickets for just 32 runs and finished with just 88 runs. Dissanayake picked up five wickets for 29 runs. The collapse left Sri Lanka needing 214 to inflict a shock defeat. However, it was not to be. The Navy capitulated in even greater style than their opponents and were eventually bowled out for 67 in 25 overs.
In Group A, Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club were forced to settle for a draw in their top of the table clash with Colombo cricket Club. Heavy rains and a notoriously boggy outfield combined to ensure that only 178.4 overs could be completed in the three-day match. Bloomfield scored 272 in the first innings and CCC were 225 for eight at the close of play. CCC looked certain to cede a first innings victory as they slumped to 151 for seven in the 52nd over. However, number eight batsman, BMTT Mendis, rescued the innings with 66 from 95 balls.
The draw means that BRC become group leaders after their emphatic defeat of Police Sports Club yesterday. The Police, who were perhaps more concerned about preparations for Independence Day, lost by an innings and 164. They failed to score a hundred runs in both innings and lost 20 wickets in the space of just 64 overs.
Singha Sports Club secured a first innings victory against Moors Sports Club despite another five-wicket haul by Rangana Herath. Singha piled up 359 in their first innings and then went on to dismiss Moors for 223.
Elsewhere there were first innings victories for Sebastianites against Antonians and Sri Lanka Air Force against Kurunegala.
