WI Domestic: Shillingford's action under scrutiny 3 February 2001
In the aftermath of recent doubts over the legality of Shane Shillingford's action, the Windward Islands are using a video camera to assess the 17-year-old off-spinner. The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) will also ask experts to closely examine the action of the young bowler who was no-balled three times for throwing last Thursday. "There is no obvious doubt that he is throwing, but we figure there must be some doubt, so we are using the technology to ascertain if it true," Windwards manager Carl Glasgow told WEEKENDSPORT yesterday. "We are going to look at it and take corrective measures if necessary." It is intended that the footage would be slowed down to have a closer look at the wrist and elbow of the Vincentian teenager. WICB chief executive officer Gregory Shillingford said there was a plan to assist the bowler. "We are going to convene the advisors to look at the action with a view to helping young Shillingford correct his action," he said. Shane Shillingford, who took 13 wickets in the first three matches of the Busta Cup, only delivered 3.3 overs in the fourth-round match against the Leeward Islands. In that match, leading Caribbean umpire Steve Bucknor no-balled him three times for throwing twice from square-leg and the other from the standing end. Although there were suspicions over his action, Shillingford was never called for throwing while playing with plenty of success in last year's regional Under-19 championship and Red Stripe Bowl. Glasgow, however, said Shillingford was not flustered by the recent turn of events. "Shillingford has been wonderful. He is not letting it bother him at all," the Windwards manager said. "He is still in very high spirits. He is one of the fun guys in the team and he is still that way." Against the background that Bucknor is down to officiate in this weekend's match between Windwards and Barbados at Kensington, Glasgow was asked if there was a possibility that Shillingford would sit out. It was a decision, he said, that would be left to the tour committee.
