Karnataka register nine-wicket win Staff Reporter - 23 December 2001
Karnataka completed the formalities and notched up a nine-wicket win over Kerala in their Ranji Trophy league match at Bangalore on Friday. The home side put up 342 for their first-innings total; the overnight score was advanced largely by a whirlwind 43 off 56 balls from Dodda Ganesh lower down the order. He was the ninth wicket to fall, with the score on 338 after striking seven fours and ensured a first-innings lead of more than 100 runs. Ganesh then swung into action with the ball as well. Along with seam-mate Venkatesh Prasad, Ganesh ripped through the Kerala batting, ending with 4-47. Prasad, at the other end, took 4-31 off 20 overs. Kerala could only muster a total of 187 in 60 overs, helped largely by M Suresh Kumar's unbeaten 53 lower down the order. Set a target of 74, Karnataka ended Day Three on 38/0 and then proceeded to canter to victory early on Day Four. KS Ponnappa fell along the way, but, ending the innings at 77/1, the hosts have garnered themselves eight points by virtue of an outright victory.
