New Zealand's leading secondary schools compete for national titles

New Zealand's top secondary schoolboys' and schoolgirls' one-day cricket teams will contest the finals next week of the Gillette Cup (boys) and Yoplait Cup (girls).

The four finalists for the Gillette Cup are Kelston Boys' High School from Auckland, St Paul's Collegiate from Hamilton, Wellington College and Otago Boys' High School from Dunedin. The four sides have emerged from a record 187 teams that entered the competition.

The Yoplait Cup had 127 entries and this year's finalists are Epsom Girls' Grammar from Auckland (winners in 1994, 1995) Napier Girls' High School (winners in 1998), New Plymouth Girls' High School (winners 2000) and Burnside High School from Christchurch.

New Zealand Cricket National Development Manager Alec Astle says he is delighted with the high number of entries.

"Developing cricket at a grass-roots level is of utmost importance to New Zealand Cricket. It's really encouraging to see the high number of entrants in this year's Yoplait and Gillette Cup competitions as it shows the time and resources we are putting into the game at this level is having a positive impact," he said.

In previous years the Gillette Cup finals have proven to be a showcase of New Zealand's emerging first-class cricket talent, with 32 players going on to play first-class cricket.

This year's draw is for the Gillette Cup Finals is:

Day One - Sunday, 9 December
St Paul's Collegiate play Otago Boys' High School
Wellington College play Kelston Boys' High School

Day Two - Monday, 10 December
Otago Boys' High School play Kelston Boys' High School
Wellington College play St Paul's Collegiate

Day Three - Tuesday 11 December
Otago Boys' High School play Wellington College
Kelston Boys' High School play St Paul's Collegiate

All Gillette Cup games will be played at Fitzherbert Park, Palmerston North.

This year's draw for the Yoplait Cup finals is:

Day One - Sunday, 9 December
New Plymouth Girls' High School play Napier Girls' High School
Epsom Girls' Grammar School play Burnside High School

Day Two - Monday, 10 December
Napier Girls' High School play Epsom Girls' Grammar School
Burnside High School play New Plymouth Girls' High School

Day Three - Tuesday, 11 December
Epsom Girls' Grammar School play New Plymouth Girls' High School
Napier Girls' High School play Burnside High School

All Yoplait Cup games will be played at Manawaroa Park, Palmerston North.
