Essex fast bowler Ashley Cowan has been severely reprimanded and fined for his conduct following an incident during the recent Cricinfo County Championship match against Lancashire at Colchester.

Cowan's verbal outburst on the field came after Neil Fairbrother was given not out following a confident appeal for a catch at the wicket.

Chief Executive David East commented:

"Both the Umpires and the Club agreed that Ashley's conduct was unacceptable. He has been fined £250 and warned about his future conduct. It is imperative we ensure standards of discipline and behaviour are maintained, and Ashley is fully aware of his responsibilities in this respect. A report is being sent to the ECB by the umpires and we will have to wait to see if any further action will be taken by them."
