U-13s win one, lose one in Kent Philip Spooner - 23 August 2001
It was a day of mixed results but nevertheless quite satisfying as the National Sports Council Under-13s continued what is fast becoming a lively tour of England. The B squad easily brushed aside the Kent Under-13s by six wickets, but the A team, though showing great spirit, was handed a 110-run defeat by the Kent Under-16s. On arriving at the Rodmersham ground, probably one of the most picturesque grounds on earth, the A team were quite surprised to realise that they would be competing against opponents three years their senior, two of whom have already been selected for the England Under-15 team. They, however, put up a sterling fight, making 147 for six off 50 overs in reply to the home side's 257 for six off 50 overs. Shamarh Brooks played an innings of high class for 42 not out, made in two hours and spanning 32 overs. The other significant contributions came from openers Mark Edghill (28) and Shane Murray (18), who posted 54 in a robust opening stand. Over at the neighbouring Bapchild Cricket Club, the B team kept up the winning record, blasting to 111 for four off 28 overs after shooting out the Kent Under-13s for 110 in 46.3 overs. Left-arm spinner Adrian Maynard was the star with five for 14 off ten overs, while off-spinners Antoine Sargeant (10-3-13-1) and Rico Phillips (8.3-4-10-2) spun a web around the Kent lads. The portly Phillips then hit a boundary-studded 46 not out, while Jonathan Carter (21) and Carlos Brathwaite (19 not out) ensured an easy victory well before 4 p.m. Wicket-keeper Renaldo Holder, stand-in captain for the day, grabbed two stumpings and a catch to showcase his rapidly improving ability behind the stumps. Both Phillips and Maynard were pleased with their day's work and their performances again showed there is real depth in this group of 25. It was tough and I had really had to get stuck in, said Phillips, a student of Alexandra. This was my first real chance on tour and I enjoyed every moment of it. Maynard, a student of Alleyne, has a very high smooth action and showed great control. It was tweaking a bit and it was definitely turning, he said.I always knew I could get a few of them today. Today the team has a three-hour journey to Guildford, Surrey, and tonight will be hosted by the British Commission in London. © The Barbados Nation Source: The Barbados Nation Editorial comments can be sent to The Barbados Nation at nationnews@sunbeach.net |
