PRELIMINARY ROUND 2
PAPUA NEW GUINEA v HONG KONG at Nadi Muslim College
Papua New Guinea's convincing winning steak continued today in the inaugural ICC East Asia - Pacific Under 19 Cricket Championships being staged in Nadi with a victory over Hong Kong. Once again, after winning the toss, the Papua New Guinea batting set an incredibly attacking pace and after 25 overs they were 4/201 scoring at eight per over. They eventually finished with 9/340 from their 50 overs. William Mula led the way with 87 from 60 balls and was well supported by Kalei Wamala (50). The tail end combination of no.9 Nosu Kini (40no) and no.10 Peter Arua (38) ensured a big total. The pick of the bowling figures was Zaran Vachha who picked up 3/53. In reply, Hong Kong were all out 105 from 35.5 overs. Danish Qureshi top scored with 21. Presented with the man of the match award by the PNG High Commissioner to Fiji, Peter Arua followed up his batting effort with 4/30 off 9.5 overs. Greg Baeau's good form with the ball continued and he finished with 3/35 from 9 overs.
With one tournament match to play before the Final, Papua New Guinea head the points table with four wins (eight points) from their allotted four games and their next match will be Saturday's Final. Fiji (zero points) play Hong Kong (two points) tomorrow and would need to complete an amazingly convincing victory to stake a claim for the other spot in the Final on net run rate.
The winner of this tournament will qualify for the next ICC Under 19 World Cup in New Zealand in Jan/Feb 2002. There they will compete against all full member Test cricket nations, One Day International member, Kenya, and the four qualifiers from the other Regions of the International Cricket Council's world-wide Development Program - Africa, the Americas, Asia & Europe.
