Richard Walsh - 15 August 2001

Somerset Under-12's saved their best for the match against the old enemy Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College.

Against Wales at Newport in early June they lost despite 62 from Andrew Roberts in the first 20 overs. In the Wales innings the pick of the Somerset bowlers was Oliver Gale-Grant with 2 for 36 in 9 overs.

A fortnight later Somerset went down to Hampshire at Prior Park College in Bath, after an indifferent batting display with the only exception being Alex Penn who made 22. When Hampshire batted John Todd enjoyed the impressive figures of 3 for 10 in 3.3 overs.

A few days later the Under-12's travelled to Sutton Coldfield to take on Warwickshire. Somerset scored 135 all out, with openers Mitch Windsor (18) and Jack Cooper (17) getting the side off to a good start by putting on 38 together. Barrowman top scored with a breezy 25, whilst Alex Howarth also weighed in with a quick 17 at the end.

The Under-12's saved their best till early July at Cheltenham. Gloucestershire batted first and scored 141 for 7, with Oliver Gale-Grant being the pick of the Somerset attack, taking 2 for 14 in 5 overs.

When Somerset batted they passed the opposition total for the loss of five wickets, with some good, positive batting from Pat Ost (32) and Ben Lyons (34) and an exciting 38 from John Todd.
