Denmark: Wins for Svanholm and Glostrup on national players' return
Peter Power - 14 August 2001
Last weekend was the first round of matches since the Danish players retuned
from the ICC Trohpy in Canada where after a good start the Danes threw away
their qualification chances with unnecessary losses. The Trophy has marked
the Dansih players physically and mentally which could be seen last weekend.
Svanholm played the Pakistani club Nørrebro and were without the bowling
services of Søren Vestergård who took most wickets in Canada. Søren is still
suffering from his calf injury sustained in the last match in Canada. Søren
played only as a batsmean. Svanholm other strike bowler from Canada Søren
Hansen has a back injury and could only bowl as a spinner whvih he did quite
well. Nørrebro were therfore able to make a good score of 208-7 against
Svanholm's weak attack. The bowlers only taking 3 wickets the others were
run out. Nørrebro's star Aftab Ahmed was one of the run outs only making 1.
Tariq Khan made 42 while Nørrebro's main strike bowler Khuram Ali took the
first three Svanholm wickets and had them constantly in trouble. But a last
wicket stand of 31 between Atif Butt and Martin Jensen withstood the
Nørrebro attack and Svanholm won by one wicket.
Svanholm's rivals these past two years Herning had beaten Svanholm earlier
in the season and this weekend Herning took on Glostrup from Copenhagen.
Herning have several players who took part in Canada and this weekend only
Lars Hedegaard made a name of himself while the others failed miserably.
Herning could only muster 108 in a rain affected match. Glostrup on the
other hand were soon in trouble thanks to Lars losing 6 wickets for 34 but
after a rian interval Peter Grünvald change the match around with 49 and
pulled home with 2 wickets to spare. Herning and Svanholm are now neck and
neck again and the two teams meet again on September 2.
The battle for third place and down to the relegaiton play-off place is now
wide open with only 4 points in it. Glostrup, Hsusum, Esbjerg and
Skanderborg all won matches this weekend. Upcomers Ishøj however look
certain for relegation again as they yet have not won a match.
The difference to the first division is still large and theres is no certain
candidate for promotion. KB lost surprisingly one match last weekend to
Fredericia and this weekend Aalborg lost to Nykøbing Mors when Aalborgs
otherwise powerfull batting line-up collapsed. The best side so far is
Svanholm's second elleven but they are not allowed to be promoted.
