Rowledge and St.Cross pushing Winchester all the way in Division 3 Mike Vimpany - 5 August 2001
An unbroken last-wicket stand of 80 between Ian Ellis and Malcolm Ball failed to save Sparsholt from defeat against Premier Division 2 rivals, Trojans at Locks Lane. Sparsholt sank to 58-9 in just 18 overs against Tim Subnaik (5-52) and Jamie Donaldson (4-17). But Ellis (35) and Ball (24) hoisted the score to 138-9, before Sparsholt hit back with vengance, taking seven wickets before Trojans squeezed past a rain-reduced target of 75 (Mike Durand 23). An unbeaten half-century by Charlie Forward (54) and Max Smith's unbeaten 31 swept Old Tauntonians & Romsey to an eight-wicket win after Easton & Martyr Worthy's 171 (Ian Butcher 53) had been cut to 119. Old Basing notched a season's best 210-7 (Ben Thane 71) before rain washed out Hambledon's visit, while Danny Smith (105) led Cove to 277-9 before a cloudburst led to United Services' visit to Farnborough being called off at tea.
Rowledge and St Cross Symondians stepped up their Southern Electric Premier Division 3 promotion challenge, but Winchester KS are still out in front. Raj Naik hit 89 as WKS piled up 226-4, but only today's England Under-17 debutant David Wheeler (82) offered a serious threat in New Milton's 171 all out. St Cross Symondians seriously dented Alton's promotion chances when they ripped the North Hampshire club out for 69 before cruising to an eight-wicket win. Australian all-rounder Craig Eichler took 4-22 before hitting a key 38 as Rowledge trimmed Flamingos by five wickets. In-form Gary Fenigan (70) guided Flamingos to 168 but second-placed Rowledge easily cruised past a rain-trimmed 145-run target. Steve Shaw cracked 126 and dominated a 224-run opening partnership with Keith Lovelock (70) as Hook & Newnham Basics piled up 257-2 to beat Portsmouth II (253-7) by eight wickets. In the basement zone, Bashley (Rydal) and Leckford both won, leaving Waterlooville and Lymington II in dire straits, just above relegated United Services. Dale Middleton (94) and Neil Sexton (37) shared a century partnership as Bashley piled up 260-3 before restrictingLymington to 162-6 (Guy Hayward 52). Only Australian Chris Baumann (67) made a contribution as Waterlooville (140) crashed to a four-wicket defeat by Havant. Mike Howard (60) and Chris White (4-14) guided Leckford to a key 92-run win at Purbrook, while Nathan Collins (5-31) spearheaded Gosport Borough's win over Paultons. © SEPL / Mike Vimpany / Daily Echo
