4th match, ARY Gold Cup, Sri Lanka v Pakistan, Statistical Highlights
Rajneesh Gupta - 17 April 2001
It was the 1708th ODI in cricket history.
It was Pakistan's 492nd and Sri Lanka's 353rd match.
It was the 86th match between these two teams. The record now reads : Pakistan 54, Sri Lanka 29, abandoned 2 and tied one.
Umpires Doug Cowie and Dave Orchard were officiating in their 59th and 69th match respectively.
Kashif Raza (right handed lower order batsman and right arm medium fast bowler from Sheikhupura) was making his ODI debut. He became 138th player to represent Pakistan in international cricket at this level.
Nuwan Zoysa was playing his 50th match. He became 25th player from Sri Lanka and the 229th overall to have reached this milestone.
Saeed Anwar (88 on 72) completed his 8000 runs in One-Day Internationals. He was playing his 221st match and 218th innings. Anwar became first Pakistani and only the sixth batsman overall after India's Sachin Tendulkar (10179 runs from 268 matches),Mohammad Azharudddin (9378 from 334), West Indian Desmond Haynes (8648 from 238), Sri Lanka's Aravinda de Silva (8432 from 275) and Australia's Mark Waugh (8245 from 232) to reach this landmark. Anwar is now the second quickest in terms of least innings taken to accomplish this feat after India's Sachin Tendulkar who needed only 210 innings to do so.
Anwar,on 79,completed his 2000 runs in matches against Sri Lanka- first batsman to do so.
Inzamam-ul-Haq (87) was scoring his 58th fifty in ODIs. He has now equalled India's Mohammad Azharuddin's record of most fifties (excluding hundreds) in a career.
The third wicket partnership of 172 runs between Anwar and Inzamam-ul-Haq was Pakistan's best for this wicket against Sri Lanka in all matches. This obliterated the previous best of 122 between Aamir Sohail and Ijaz Ahmed at Lahore on 05-11-1997.
Marvan Atapattu completed his 4000 runs in ODIs just before getting out. He was batting in his 124th match and 122nd innings. Atapattu became fifth Sri Lankan batsman (after Aravinda de Silva 8432 , Arjuna Ranatunga 7456, Sanath Jayasuriya 6506 and Roshan Mahanama 5162) and 46th batsman from all countries to have done so. Atapattu has taken least innings and matches among Sri Lankan batsmen to reach this milestone bettering Aravinda de Silva's previous record of 146 matches and 141 innings. Atapattu, though is nowhere near West Indian Viv Richards' ODI record who had reached this landmark in only 96 matches and 88 innings.
Chaminda Vaas (50*) scored his maiden fifty. His previous highest was 34 (made on three occasions-twice unbeaten).By taking 157 matches to score his maiden fifty, Vaas now holds the dubious distinction of taking most matches to score a fifty. The previous record was on the name of India's Javagal Srinath who made his maiden fifty in his 112th match. Vaas, however, can take some solace from the fact that seven players have appeared in more matches than him without making a fifty. They are India's Anil Kumble (208 matches with a highest of 26), Pakistan's Waqar Younis (207 matches ,Hs 37),West Indian Courtney Walsh (205 matches , Hs 30), Curtly Ambrose (176 matches, Hs 31*), Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan (165 matches, Hs 18), Pakistan's Aaqib Javed (163 matches, Hs 45*) and India's Venkatesh Prasad (159 matches, Hs 19).
The ninth wicket unbroken partnership of 45 between Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan equalled the best by any side for this wicket at Sharjah. Richie Richardson and Ian Bishop had added 45 runs for West Indian also against Pakistan on 17-10-1991.
Saaed Anwar was winning his 26th Man of the Match award. He has now equalled West Indian Desmond Haynes and Sri Lankan Aravinda de Silva's tally of awards. Only Indian Sachin Tendulkar (38) and West Indian Viv Richards (31) are ahead of Anwar.
Anwar has now won 10 awards at this ground- most by any player. He was previously at level with nine awards with Tendulkar.
