Gloucestershire, the one-day kings, are aiming for success in the four-day game this season.

Much has been written about last year – how a side without stars and much greater than the sum of its parts came to win all three one-day domestic competitions. Indeed, captain Mark Alleyne was rewarded for his ability to get the most out of his players by being named one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year.

Whether Gloucestershire can maintain their extraordinary one-day success remains to be seen.

But coach Paul Bracewell, the former New Zealand all-rounder, also has his sights set on County Championship success. After missing out on promotion by just two points last season, Bracewell believes a rise into Division One is within Gloucestershire's compass this year.

If the county is to achieve four-day success, they will need their batsmen to contribute more; Matt Windows was easily their biggest championship scorer last season with 790 runs.

They will be looking for another sackful of wickets from Jon Lewis who took more first-class wickets than any other England-qualified pace bowler last season.

But they are likely to be without seamer Mike Smith for the start of the season; he is still nursing a groin injury which he suffered towards the end of last season. A further blow comes with the news that a slipped disc will keep Jack Russell out for the start of the campaign.
