Age no barrier for Malcolm
CricInfo - 10 April 2001

Devon Malcolm embarks upon his 17th season of first-class cricket with the enthusiasm that made him one of the world's fastest bowlers undiminished.

A change of club has re-ignited Malcolm's passion, having moved from Northants to Leicestershire during the winter. Some may have seen the signing of a 38-year-old seamer on a two-year deal as a risk, but Malcolm's words will reassure supporters of the Midlands club.

"It might be the twilight of my career but I am as fit as ever and just as enthusiastic," he said. "It is a great move for me and I am as excited about the new season as I was when I was a kid."

Malcolm believes that his experience will provide an edge to his game, while his desire to win the championship is cited as a further spur. Certainly his performances on the club's pre-season tour of South Africa have impressed observers.

"I still have fire in my belly and will be looking to bowl quickly and take wickets. I also have far more experience now and I think that will help Leicestershire. I have had a good career at Test and county level but I have never been part of a championship-winning team. It would be the icing on the cake for me if I could achieve that here - and I believe I can," he claimed.

Malcolm joins overseas player Daniel Marsh, the left-arm spinning allrounder and son of Rodney, and left-arm seamer Matthew Whiley as the new faces at Grace Road.
