SAWCA: Gauteng and Northerns to fight for the trophy. Keith Lane - 6 April 2001
Paarl: At the end of day four the two strong outfits from the North, Northerns and Gauteng, remain the only unbeaten teams in the SWACA Inter Provincial. Tomorrow is D-Day as they meet at Idas Valley to see who will end top of the Platinum group. Gauteng had the easier match today as they beat a struggling Free State by 88 runs. Suffering an early setback the Gauteng pair of Daleen Terblanche (40) and Tamara Reeves (51) got the innings back on track to end on 186 for seven. This proved too many for the girls from Free State who collapsed to 98 all out. Northerns made heavy weather of beating the current holders Western Province getting home by two wickets after the Capetonians had posted 178 for nine. Zelda Brits being the destroyer in chief of the Western Province innings taking 4/32. Anina Burger (49) was again in the runs for Northerns while Alison Hodgkinson picked up 4/34. Eastern Province kept their hopes alive of winning the Gold Group with a three wicket win against the promising Western Province `B' team. S.Pillay one of the form batsmen of the week eventually lost her wicket and now boast the top average of 130. Boland cruised to joint top of the Gold Group with a nine wicket win against Griqualand West. Sanmari Jacobs scoring a 62 out of 113 for Griquas while Z Joseph replied with a 76* for Boland. North West continued the dominance of women's cricket in the North with a close one wicket win over Easterns. Easterns the up and coming team in South African women's cricket have up to now not been able to win a match but can keep their heads high with good performances resulting in close finishes. Sunette Viljoen scored her second half-century of the week as North West chased the 149 set by Easterns. Karren Momberg 4/21 was not enough to give Easterns a win. Alicia Bezuidenhout took 4/26 during the Easterns innings. KwaZulu-Natal, the team with the up down form, lost their match against Border being bowled out in chasing 166 to win. Results:
Gauteng (186/7) beat Free State (98) by 88 runs.
