England U17 start tour with victory Sean Beynon - 4 April 2001
Three batsmen made runs as England Under-17's began their tour to Australia with a comfortable victory over their South Australia counterparts at Adelaide on Tuesday. Chasing 202 from their 50 overs, opener Bilal Shafayat remained unbeaten on 86, as England won by eight wickets with nine balls to spare. The 16 year-old opener hit 10 boundaries in his 154 ball knock, and was supported by Yorkshire's Andrew Gayle, who made 58 before being run out. South Australia used no less than eight bowlers in an attempt to make breakthroughs following the early loss of Joe Sayers. Samit Patel weighed in with a quick fire 45 to power England home. He struck four boundaries and a six in an unbeaten 59 ball knock. Tim Bresnan and David Barrick picked up two scalps apiece in South Australia's innings, which was buoyed by skipper Ferguson's 69. England take on South Australia Under-17's for a second time on Thursday before playing a three-day and a one-day match with the national Under-17 team.
