Southern Premier League Division 1 - Week 18 Report Mike Vimpany - 4 September 2000
Burridge pulled off a remarkable Hoodini type escape to claw themselves off the bottom of the ECB Southern Premier League - but who goes down between themselves and Cove may yet to decided at Lord's. Fastened to the league basement all season, Burridge achieved a maximum-point 74-run victory at Grasmere Road to plant Cove on the bottom. But the Farnborough club have appealed to the Hampshire Cricket Board against The Management Committee's decision last week to reduce their points-per-match average. Their match against Havant on August 12, abandoned because of the dangerous surface, was deemed by the Premier League management to be a game played by Cove. Burridge produced their best performance of the season to chalk up 226-5 with John Francis (69) and Matt Compton (42) sharing a century third wicket stand. Cove, needing to deny Burridge precious bowling points by batting with responsibility, produced a lacklustre response and were dismissed for 152. Andrew Rashleigh hit 40 not out, while Paul Jenkins (3-40) produced the best figures for jubilant Burridge. Calmore Sports pipped B.A.T.Sports by one wicket to claim the overall runners-up spot, but they narrowly failed to deny Havant the 50-over pennant. Middle-order partnerships involving Jez Goode (50), Clive Surry (40) and Martin Kellaway (37) eased Calmore to 209-9 (Paul Draper 37), with Terry Rawlins taking 4-39. Richard Kenway (84) and Dave Banks (63) fired BAT, but after a four-wicket burst by Allan Hurst (4-43), BAT were left requiring two runs off the final ball for a one-wicket win. Mark Turner failed to lay a bat on Paul Draper's final delivery of the season as BAT finished at 208-9. The season ended in humiliation for Bashley (Rydal), who were skittled for 46 by Andover - their lowest ever score. Only Dale Middleton reached the dizzy heights of double figures as Bashley were shot out in 32 overs and resoundingly beaten by nine wickets at London Road. Bashley's batsmen got themselves out to a series of poor shots - Dean Woodhouse (3-8), Ian Langdown (3-0), Kirk Stewart (2-13) and Andy Hooper (2-14) ripping through their batting. Roger Miller, who beat Bashley's Luke Ronchi to the league batting prize, and younger brother Mark completed the formalities. Mike Stonier's probable Bournemouth farewell ended in disappointment with a six-wicket defeat by champions Havant, who have pipped Calmore Sports to the 50-over 'pennant'. Martin Miller (43) and Tom Webley gave Bournemouth a sound enough start, but the middle-order gave way to Phil Loat (4-44) and Luke Sears (3-16) before the unwell Matt Swarbrick (39), coming in at number seven, and Mark Ligtermoet (27) redressed the balance. Havant, needing to keep their wickets intact to ensure finishing above Calmore in the 'pennant', had to bat with care responding to Bournemouth's 171 all out. Andy Perry (41) and Luke Sears (45) grafted 83 for the first wicket, but Bournemouth achieved four breakthroughs before Richard Lewis (30) and Daniel Oliver (23) saw them home. Steve Benbough (82) and Jamie Glasson (61) starred as South Wilts swept to a fifth successive win, beating Hungerford by 48 runs. South Wilts made 205-5 (Manzoor Elahi 43) and then dismissed Hungerford for 157 (Jim Ettridge 63), with young semers Andy Jeffries (4-36) and Jim Tomlinson (2-20) taking the credits. © Mike Vimpany
