South Perth Cricket Club newsletter - Issue 2 Vol 3 Ian Waite - 21 October 2000
State Duties Improve Preparation for Season's Opener The bulk of our WACA 1st Grade squad have received the very best assistance in preparation for the first scheduled match of the Season against a Combined Metropolitan XI in Round 1 of the BankWest Cup match for Monday 2nd October 2000 being played away. Pre-season matches against visiting Natal and Victorian sides have kept many of our senior players hard at work in their preseason preparation. These matches with other "State Trial" matches continue to provide hard centre wicket preparation but have also provided frustration to the considerable efforts of Chairman of Selectors, Rodney Redmond and Head Coach, Darryll Smith in their preseason training program. Amongst our "missing" players have been, Damien Martyn, Darren Wates, Stuart Karpinnen, Gavin Wates, Hugh Brown and expected newcomer, Chris Rogers. All have been included in matches and or heavily involved in State Training Programmes. This, with the late return from England of Peter Waite and the other expected newcomer into our ranks, Brad Oldroyd have thinned our Club training ranks substantially. "We expect the level of training and match play our senior players are getting at the WACA will be sufficient preparation to ensure our first victory of the season.... After all, the promotion of our players to the highest level possible is what we are all about..." "The first WACA Pennant's Games for the season are scheduled for 7th and 8th October against Fremantle. Team selections will be announced in the Clubrooms, immediately after training on Thursday 5th October at the Initial Player's Tea." Rodney Redmond announced. All members are welcome to call in. This marks the commencement of the Cricket Season. New Laws of Cricket - Short Pitched Bowling The WACA Cricket Council has determined that competitions controlled by the Cricket Council will play under the new "Laws of Cricket" this season. The decision follows the ICC and the ACB in conditions of play in regard to short-pitched deliveries. Changes do not include the Law that addresses wicket-keepers gloves in relation to the material allowed between the thumb and forefinger on the wicket-keeper's gloves. The Pennant Cricket Committee have agreed that 12 months grace be given to players playing in Cricket Council competitions. This provides players 12 months in which to update equipment and the Mueleman's to sell all their old stock. There are other changes concerning bowling restrictions for Under 19 cricketers playing in senior cricket; amendment to the No-ball rules in Sunday League and Colts competitions and other minor changes not addressed in this article. The bowling of fast short pitched deliveries (abbreviated): If a bowler is no balled a second time in the innings for the same offence, the Umpire shall advise the bowler this is his final warning. A third such offence in the same innings shall cause the Umpire to remove the bowler forthwith from bowling and the bowler cannot bowl again in that innings. (NB. Full Rule Changes can be found under Law 42.6 and 42.7 on the Laws of Cricket).
'ello 'ello 'ello ... 3rd International Police Cricket Festival at South Perth Our friends at the Perth CC and ourselves have won the honour of hosting the bulk of the 3rd International Police Cricket Festival during February and March 2001. Your Committee has worked hard to win these events that are sure to be lucrative but will require some dedicated effort from a number of volunteers. The games scheduled for Richardson Park are as follows: WA Police Vs London Metro Police Worcester Police Vs Canadian Police Monday 26th February 2001 Round 2 Canada Police Vs Barbados Police Victoria Police Vs South Africa Police Thursday 1st March 2001 Round 3 WA Police Vs Barbados Police Bermuda Police Vs Sussex Police Monday 5th March 2001 Round 4 Lancashire Police Vs Worcester Police Tuesday 6th March 2001 Round 5 Grand Final Friday 9th March 2001 We are expected to cater for up to 150 persons for lunch, teas and drinks in each of the rounds and even more on the Grand Final. While food will be out-sourced we are looking for about 4 coordinators who will be free to assist the Club in the areas of: Catering coordinator; Bar & Drinks coordinator, Ground/seating and change room coordinator, and Kitchen (tea and coffee) coordinator. It would be beaut to think that we could get some new faces to help in what will be one of our most challenging events undertaken by the Club for some time - see if we can give the regular helpers a bit of a rest this season, eh! Now don't be bashful - ring or see Ian Waite, President, home: 9368 2243 or email him at melwin@space.net.com Club Bids for U/13 and U/15's Carnival Director of Junior Cricket, Ted Allen, is preparing our bid to host the Under 13's Carnival and the Under 15's Carnival in the WACA District Junior Competition to be held January 30th to Feb 1st and December 18th to 20th this season. Some Background on the Real Twelve Brothers Cricket Club In last month's edition of the Newsletter it was announced that the Real Twelve Brothers CC would be in Perth on their Tour of Australia in November. We have arranged a game for them against a Colts side on the Sunday 5th November on Richo No 2 while the Carrier-apac Cool Team fight out a battle against Perth CC on Richo No 1. The Club is intending to field a President's XI against them. Most likely on Tuesday the 7th November. There is still a position or two left. The team selection can come from any playing member of the SPCC, WACA or Suburban Turf - it's open, and would be shameful if we had to rely on outsiders to fill a team, notwithstanding it's mid week. Maybe the following "Press Release" could whet your appetite by Tariq Majeed: "Haji Sheikh Sarwar and Mittra Street Sham Nagar, Chouberji, would appear to a lay man. A mere name and a populated locality in Lahore. Yet both the man and the locality have an identy; the man more so, Haji Sheikh Sarwar has twelve sons, a matter for pride by any body. But his pride is not only related to his 12 sons - it's having 12 cricket playings in a family, whose dedication to this much followed sporting discipline, but also reflects a brotherly affection and unity so missing in our self-centered society." "And centered in the heart of Chouberji is their Club, appropriately named as 'The Real Twelve Brothers Cricket Club', with more emphasis on the word 'real'. There have been 'Brothers Clubs', yet at most boasting two or three real brothers ... But no sport can ever claim to have a whole team consisting of brothers." "But Real Twelve Brothers Club is manned by real brothers - eleven form the team while the 12th acts as Manager. Proper nets are conducted at the Chouberji Eagle's Grounds, under the watchful eyes of the eldest brother, Sheikh Ashraf Zulfiqar is the captain of the team with Latif as his deputy. (They, with all their brothers) studied in the same school, Chourberji Gardens ... (and some) attend MAO College, Lahore." "... there is every probability that in coming years this 'Real Brothers Cricket Club' may provide real brothers in our national team, like Waqar Hasan-Pervaiz Saijad, Saeed Ahmed M. Younis, Waseem Raja-Rameez Raja, Hanif-Wazir-Mushtaq-Sadiq or yesteryear." Now you should be frothing at the mouth to have a crack at them - call Ian Waite and register your interest on after hours 9368 2243, fax: 9367 7179 or email on melwin@space.net.au A Warm Welcome to our Two Danish Hopefuls We are sure all Members will make this year's Cricket Scholarship winners from Denmark a warm welcome to the Club. Bobby Chawleris will be 18 years old in December. Both his parents come from India. He started playing cricket at the age of 10 and won the Danish Championship for youth teams last year also with the seniors. He's regarded as the most promising leg-spinner in Danish cricket. He went with the national team to NatWest Trophy 2000 in England and attended a leg-spinners seminar conducted by our great Terry Jenner. Last year in Ireland he was named player of the tournament and took about 20 wickets in an Under 19's international competition. This year he took part in the National side which played in Scotland where he played against Ireland. He took 3 wickets for 35 in 8 overs. Frederik Klokker is 17 years old and grew up on a farm in Denmark. He finished High School this summer and is now working as a carpenter. He's been in England this summer playing cricket at Lords with the MCC. Frederik, similar to Bobby has played cricket since he was 10 years old. He is a left-handed opening batsman and wicketkeeper. He has won the Danish Championship with all the youth sides he has played in. He represented Denmark and opened the batting in the youth World Cup for Under 19s played in South Africa at the tender age of 14. This winter Frederik went with the Danish National Team to Zimbabwe, where he claims he learnt a great deal, and played in one game during the tour. He took part in Natwest Trophy 2000 with the National Team together with Bobby Chawleris and is presently the Captain of both the U-17 and U-19 Danish National youth teams. He has achieved a double century in Denmark's junior league (209 not out) and this year he has made more than 500 runs in senior league. Both Bobby and Frederik are looking forward to their stay in Perth and develop their cricket knowledge. Ken Kennedy Renews Membership James Bergin St John "Ken" Kennedy, former WACA player and son of Foundation President and Life Member, Bergin St John Kennedy, dropped us a line during the month with a cheque for his non playing membership fees following a brief interlude. He wrote the following note to prompt those amongst us whom may have forgotten his involvement: "During recent times I have had phone talks with Ian Waite and Ian McNabb but it is many years since I paid a subscription. I must mention the following to assist you all in knowing whom I am." "As far as I know I was born in the old Kennedy Family home at the corner of King Edward and Riverview Roads, South Perth on 13th February 1916. So was around to see the strip of bush and swamp land between Richardson Street and the Golf Links developed into Richardson Park and also the Cricket Club get started." "I was a member of the Club's second team at the start of the 1931'32 season but left to join the State Shipping Service MV Kystra (858 tons) but my life at sea finished when I nearly lost my left foot when I managed to get it caught in the forward windlass whilst we were alongside the old jetty in Albany and so could not start cricket again with the Club until the 1934 season and managed to play with the various teams until 1940 when together with my brothers, Dick and Peter we formed the 14th Battery 2/9th Aust. .... Regiment 9th Division, AIF. We were in Palestine (Israel) for Christmas 1940 and then spent most of 1941 in the Western Desert Area of Egypt up to the Libyan border and returned to Helippolis (Cario) for Christmas. Early in 1942 we drove all the way up to the top of Syria and were based in Aeippo and then back to Litariou before moving back to Egypt for the El Alamein battles (July to October)" "Upon our return to Australia in 1943 we went straight up to Atherton Tablelands, Nth Queensland and were joined by a younger brother Neil (all brothers had been members of the various teams over the years) and in due course we were all with the regiment in Borneo until the war finished and was able to rejoin the Club in the 1946 season and so met up with Ian McNabb during the following years until age, marriage and Chartered Accountancy duties told me it was time to retire from cricket." "Over the years I have always followed the Club's results with interest and sadly, these days, I'm more or less confined to my home ... and sadly, when talking to the two Ian's there are very few of my old team mates still around ... Good Stealth and Very Best Wishes to all, Ken Kennedy. Editors Note: Thank's Ken on behalf of all the Club Thomson Fisher Continue Their Support The firm of Chartered Accountants, Thomson Fisher & Co, located in West Perth, have again demonstrated their support of the Club in the best way that accountants can do - a cash donation. Partners Trevor Thomson (Life Member) and Jamie Fisher have consistently been amongst the first of our valued list of sponsors and donors to come forward and renew their commitment to the Members of the South Perth Cricket Club. The Club, as a whole really appreciates your continuing support, Onya Trevor, Onya Jamie. Improved Reproduction For the previous two seasons your Newsletter has been compiled by Jennifer Ligtermoet who owns a Future Kids computer learning franchise. Jennifer continues the task this year and continues to do so without any financial reward. So as to assist her and up-grade the presentation of the Newsletter your Club has contributed half the cost of a laser printer which, by the evidence of the improved quality reproduction quality of this edition seems to validate this small investment. Jennifer's business whilst specialising in teaching kids computer skills also undertakes individual tutorials to adults. She also runs small classes catered specifically to teach us computer ill-literates the basics and advanced classes. If you want your kids to get a head start or if you need a bit of computer coaching yourself give Jennifer a ring on 9470 6672. On the quiet, she's helped a lot of Members. WACA Seeks Score Service Assistant Got nothing to do between 5.30 pm and 7.00 pm on a Saturday (and occasional Sunday) and would like to assist the WACA with the operation of the WACA Score Service.
