WI Local: Keeper stars with the bat Louis Linton - 29 October 2000
St. Catherine 189-9 vs Pickwick Patrick Browne, BNB St. Catherine’s emerging wicket-keeper, yesterday put together another fine innings to confirm his rich potential. Using more bat than pad and showing great patience, unusual characteristics among today’s teenage batsmen, Browne made 51 before hooking at a short delivery and skying a catch to first slip. His innings was made off 96 balls and took 131 minutes. Browne’s batting was not the only highlight of the day, as ESA Field Pickwick pacer Kelso Odaine, in two spells from the southern end, collected five for 31 off 10.1 overs. Generating pace and bounce, Odaine removed openers Kayode Pantophlet and Jason Jordan with only 28 runs on the board. Dane Maynard was comprehensively bowled for six and in the next delivery Victor Skeete was caught at the wicket by Hendy Hinds, leaving Odaine on a hat-trick. However, the hat-trick was foiled by captain Roger Blades and the umpires offered light at 5:20 p.m. Later in the innings, with St. Catherine cruising on 171 for five, Odaine returned with a late burst and snatched up three wickets in the space of 24 deliveries. Before Browne and Odaine stole the spotlight, Shawn Sargeant, batting at No. 3, made an impressive 53 off 63 balls. He came in after the early damage and stamped his authority in a knock lasting just 77 minutes. He struck three fours and a pull for six over mid-wicket. © The Barbados Nation
