Police SC too much for Antonians SC
Staff and Agencies - 28 October 2000

Police Sports Club secured a relatively comfortable victory over Antonians Sports Club in their first match of the Premier League One-Day Tournament at Police Park today.

Police SC, who were asked to bat first having lost the toss, were bowled out 216. However, the total proved to be sufficient on a pitch that generally deteriorates as the match progresses, as Antonians could only muster 183.

The Police got off to a good start, the openers, Priyantha (18) and Udawatthe (31) putting on 47 runs for the first wicket in ten overs. However they then lost 4 wickets for 14 runs before a half century by Liyanage (51) rescued the Police. He was well supported by WNM Zoysa (33).

Alwis, who picked up 4 for 30 in his ten overs was the pick of the bowlers.

In reply, Antonians started positively. The openers, Pieris (39) and Siriwardene (13) added 29 for the first wicket. Chaturanga (12) then added 31 with Peiris. However, Antonians, who at one stage were 92 for 2, lost three middle order wickets for just three runs.

Warnakuwatta (47*) scared the Police when his unbeaten knock, but when Lokuhetti (25) was dismissed to end a partnership of 61, the Antonian innings went into freefall.
