Ijaz and Arshad axed from one-dayers 17 October 2000
Karachi, Oct 16: Middle-order batsman Ijaz Ahmad and off-spinner Arshad Khan face the axe as Pakistan cricketers assemble for a short training camp starting from Oct 20. The players, who arrive on Tuesday for Wednesday's festival match, will prepare for the first one-day international against England to be played here on Oct 24. According to sources, Ijaz, who scored just one in Pakistan's semi- final defeat in the ICC knockout tournament, and Arshad, who went for 56 from his nine overs, will not be considered for the one-day and Test series'. The national selection committee has submitted one-day and Test teams to the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Lt Gen Tauqir Zia who will be discussing the squads with the captain and coach on Wednesday. The selectors have named wrist spinners Mushtaq Ahmad and uncapped rookie Danish Kaneria, and pinch-hitter Shahid Afridi in the 15-man one-day squad. "Shahid Afridi will come in place of Ijaz Ahmad while Mushtaq Ahmad will replace Arshad Khan. Shahid is being brought back to give the captain more bowling options," official sources said. Younis Khan, the middle-order batsman from Peshawar, has been named in the 16-man Test squad. Following is the squad: Moin Khan (captain), Inzamam-ul-Haq (vice-captain), Saeed Anwar, Salim Elahi, Imran Nazir, Shahid Afridi, Yousuf Youhana, Faisal Iqbal, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Azhar Mahmood, Abdur Razzaq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mushtaq Ahmad and Danish Kaneria.
