Panadura Sports Club are threatening an upset after day two of the Under-23 Division One tournament at Maitland Place today. Pandura secured a first inning’s points victory and are now placed in a commanding position over CCC in the second innings.
After being bowled out for 209 runs in their first innings, the Panadura bowlers put up a gallant performance to dismiss three CCC top order batsmen for 58 runs at close. CCC are still facing a deficit of two runs.
Panadura SC resumed the day on their overnight score of 68 for the loss of three wickets. After the addition of one run to the overnight score, their skipper and inform batsman, Chamara Silva, departed, after scoring four runs. He was well caught by T.Mendis off left arm off spinner Nisitha Rupasinghe.
One stage they were reeling at 128 for 6 with CCC looking likely to secure the first innings points. However, CCC’s hopes were shattered, when they grassed some vital catches and missed two run out chances. Panadura SC tailenders capitalized on these chances and posted 209 runs, before they were bowled out ten minutes before tea break.
R.Wimalasena top scored with a patient 62 from 164 balls, which included just two boundaries. Nisitha Rupasinghe became the only bowler, to trouble the opposition batsmen and claimed six wickets from a marathon 40 over spell.
The dejected CCC coach, Hemantha Devapriya, said that the boys had a poor show on the field. “Several catches were grassed at crucial stages of the match. It was even worst when they missed two run outs. The pressure mounted on us because we were defending a small total. We can’t effort to give away so many chances. In any form of the game, one will have to take the chances on offer, especially catches, to win matches”.
Facing a deficit of 60 runs, CCC commenced their second innings with the intention of scoring runs quickly but without losing wickets. Once again they had a disastrous start by losing three top order batsmen for just 16 runs by the 11 over. Hemantha Boteju (18) their highest scorer so far in the season, with two centuries and a half-century, came into the rescue with K.Ranaweera (34), to consolidate the innings. They were 58 for the loss of three wickets at close.
