Southern Premier League Division Two - Week 3 Report Mike Vimpany - 28 May 2000
An unbeaten 66 by Chris Tremlett earned Hursley Park a dramatic one-wicket victory over Southern Premier League Divison Two rivals, Old Tauntonians and Romsey. The tall, lanky Chandler's Ford teenager kept his cool - and his stumps intact - as Hursley edged past OTR's 193-8 off the second ball of the final over. Raman Prendergast (31) and Iain Brunnschweiler (27) were the only batsmen to offer Tremlett much support, as Max Smith and Richard Taylor threatened to steal a victory for OTR. Ian Tulk (66), with his third successive half-century, and Smith (52) shared a second wicket stand of 97 in OTR's 193-8 (Prendergast 4-42). Trojans shot Alton out for 95, but lost nine wickets themselves before pipping their north Hampshire opponents by one wicket at Stoneham Lane. Richard Bull (4-18) had Alton reeling at 24-5 before lower-order resistance lifted the visitors to a more respectable 95 all out. Even though Trojans lurched to 34-5 themselves, the Stoneham club thought they had the game in the bag when John Gillespie (27) and Mike Durand (21) hoisted the reply to 85-5. But four more wickets fell for eight runs before Trojans' last wicket pair scrambled the winning runs. Hampshire 2nd XI all-rounder Lawrie Prittipaul shone for table topping Portsmouth, who beat struggling Hambledon by six wickets at Drayton Park. Prittipaul took 3-33 and hit an undefeated 61 as Portsmouth cruised past Hambledon's 142-9 (Matt Jones 39). Dave Tiller's figures of 4-29 for Portsmouth included a hat-trick. Paul Marks struck a flowing 92 and featured in two prominent partnerships as Winchester KS powered to a 73-run win over United Services Portsmouth at Burnaby Road. Southampton Institute newcomer Paul Davies (32), Jimmy Taylor (31) and Chris Wheeler (27 not out) provided Marks with timely support as Winchester ran up 224-7. Shorn of three top order batsmen, US slipped to 80-5 before Andy Crofts (59) helped their reply to a respectable 151 all out. Indian spinner Raj Naik (3-29) and Stu Marks (3-24), who claimed the key wicket of Matthew Keech, were Winchester's key bowlers. It was a desperate weekend for Lymington, whose two Premier League sides suffered heavy defeats. Liphook and Ripsley won by a thumping 112-run margin at the Sports Ground, while Sparsholt ran up a massive 339-3 against Lymington II at Locks Lane. Liphook's 223-8 was built around the hard-hitting Kiwi Mayu Pasupati (75) and Jeremy Bulled (70) - University pair Will Follett (4-48) and Will Buck (4-62) sharing the wickets. Lymington lost Glyn Treagus second ball and crumbled to 111 all out (Neil Trestrail 24), with spinner Dave Elliott (4-23) and Pasupati (3-23) on top.
