Southern Premier League - Division One - Week 3 Report Mike Vimpany - 28 May 2000
World Cup batsman Kennedy Otieno made an immediate mark on Southern Premier League cricket, scoring a century for B.A.T.Sports within 48 hours of arriving from Nairobi. The Kenya opener hit an accomplished century as B.A.T. overcame a dramatic pre-tea collapse to snatch a fortuitous 'run-rate' victory over Hungerford, who were firmly in the driving sear when rain halted play. Hungerford had reached 148-2 off 38.2 overs, requiring an adjusted 191 from 46 overs, before the continuous rain led to conditions becoming unplayable. Otieno's century bore all the hallmarks of a player well versed in building a one-day 50-over innings. Playing each ball on its merit and working the ball around effectively, he struck two sixes and nine fours in a well constructed 105, sharing useful partnerships, initially with Damian Shirazi, then Richard Kenway who made a fluent 44. But some undistinguished batting caused B.A.T. to plunge from 171-2 to 207 all out - a total subsequently trimmed to 190 (46 overs). It was a target Hungerford looked set to achieve - Toby Radford (71 not out) leading the chase before the umpires correctly abandoned play seven overs from the scheduled end. Calmore Sports paid the ultimate price for dropping Roger Sillence four times as the Wiltshire all-rounder unleashed a fearsome boundary barrage to sweep South Wilts to a six-wicket victory at Loperwood Park. Sillence cracked six sixes and 12 fours in a blistering 122 not out as South Wilts, set 229 for victory, clawed their way back from a worrying 54-3 to win at a canter. Calmore had enjoyed a sound afternoon session, with openers James Hibberd (63) and Paul Draper (49) putting on a quick-fire 97 before the latter became the first of three run-out victims. Robert Budd (37) and Martin Kellaway (26) enabled Calmore to score 228-9, with youngsters Jim Tomlinson (2-37) and Chris Steedon (2-44) taking the bowling credits. Russell Rowe (24), Jamie Glasson and Tim Lamb were dismissed before Sillence struck South Wilts to victory. His boundary blitz, aided with supporting knocks from Glen Allpress (35) and Steve Benbough (24), carried South Wilts home with five overs to spare. Bournemouth's trip to Burridge was reduced to a 35-overs affair - but the Fareham club were never at the races, finishing 61 runs adrift of an adjusted target. The century opening partnership beteween Mike Stonier (68) and Julian Cassell (41) effectively won the game for Bournemouth. Martin Miller (27) watched as Bournemouth slumped from 100-0 to 198-9. Burridge skipper Paul Ancell (4-26) made frequent inroads. Even though Bournemouth's total was reduced to 146, there was never much threat of Burridge winning. Several batsmen got into double figures, but Joe Wilson (3-15) struck as Burridge reached 86-7 to lose by 61 runs. Andover's 15 run victory at Havant has left Bournemouth with the only unblemished record after three rounds of matches. Andover rattled up 192-5, with Roger Miller (70) and Tim Keighley (42 not out) improving on earlier contributions by Mark Miller (26) and Jerry Hayward (21) by adding 91 immediately before tea. Havant appeared to be in the driving seat while Luke Sears (57) and Daniel Oliver (42 not out) were together, but they lost three wickets in the 41st overs ... and the game as a result. Andy Hooper (3-24) and Mark Peterson (3-35) combined to send Haant slipping to 177 all out - and their first defeat. Bashley (Rydal) inflicted a third successive defeat on Cove, who are finding it hard to adapt in a higher standard of cricket than they were accustomed in the Thames Valley League. The visitors dictated the terms throughout, eventually defeating the struggling Farnborough club by 30 runs at Grasmere Road. Bashley's 206-8 was built around Neil Thurgood (56) and, more particularly, Steve Latimore (46) and Luke Ronchi, who cracked a forceful 65. Once Kevin Nash (2-48) removed Hampshire 2nd XI left-hander James Adams (caught behind by Ronchi), Cove's prospects disappeared. John Whiting (2-11), Matt King (2-37) and Ian Hilsum achieved further breakthroughs as Cove dipped to 176 all out (Neil Randall 34).
