Southern Premier League Divison Two - Week 2 Report Mike Vimpany - 28 May 2000
Portsmouth are already shaping up as the team to beat in Southern Premier League Division Two after an emphatic second win by six wickets, over fancied Winchester K.S. at River Park. Hefty 126-winners over Liphook and Ripsley on day one, they skittled Winchester for 92 (Dave Greetham 22), with Lawrie Prittipaul (4-20), Dean Oliffe (3-19) and Paul Dew (2-3) creating all the problems. Portsmouth, looking to re-establishing themselves back on their old St.Helens Southsea seafront ground shortly, lost four wickets themselves, but were guided home by Geoff Pike (34) and Matthew Scott, whose 29 not out included two big sixes. Old Tauntonians and Romsey are the only other club to have won both their opening games - Ian Tulk once again being the inspiration behind an 11-run win at Alton. Tulk followed his league-best 89 against Hambledon with an equally important 57 at Alton, playing key roles in partnerships with Mike Trodd (29) and elder brother Stuart Tulk (36) as OT&R climbed to 188-7. Julian Ballinger (45) and Richie Morgan (41) had Alton sniffing a possible victory at 107-2, but the emergence of left-arm spin duo Terry Azor (4-34) and Nick Wood (3-25) gradually colled their expectations. Alton lost three wickets for four runs and were eventually dismissed for 177. Glyn Treagus warmed up for Dorset's NatWest Trophy tie against Norfolk at Dean Park tomorrow (Tues, 10.45am) with an unbeaten century which steered Lymington to an emphastic eight-wicket win over Hursley Park at the Sports Ground. Besides scoring 100 not out, Treagus snapped up four Hursley Park wickets as the Winchester club tumbled from a dominant 130-2 to 171 all out. The visitors appeared well set for a substantial total while South African-based left-hander David Jackson (61) and Paul Edwards (35) were together. But with Treagus and Hampshire's Zac Morris each returning figures of 4-30, Hursley lost their last eight wickets for 41 runs - a collapse which effectively ended their hopes. Lymington, who lost their opening match at United Services, took full advantage, with Treagus (100*) and Morris (37*) sharing an unbroken century stand and improving on Neil Trestrail's earlier 25. A three-wicket burst by Richard Bull (3-18), which ripped out Hambledon's top order, set Trojans up for a 42-run victory at Ridge Meadow. Even though Trojans contrived to bowl 39 wides, Hambledon seldom looked capable of challenging the visitors' 149 all out and were dismissed for 107, with Simon Williams returning 4-30. Williams (25) played his part in a 60-run opening partnership with Mario Mohammad (40). Lee Wateridge hit 36 as Trojans grafted their way to 149, Ian Turner taking four wickets. Liphook and Ripsley bounced back from the previous week's mauling at Portsmouth to beat United Services Portsmouth (137) by three wickets.
