Southern Premier League Division One - Week 2 Report Mike Vimpany - 28 May 2000
Havant and Bournemouth are setting the initial pace in the ECB Southern Premier League, with back-to-back victories in their opening two matches. Andy Perry, who struck a crucial 85 in Havant's opening-day win over B.A.T.Sports, scored a career-best 125 not out in the 15-run victory over ring rusty Bashley (Rydal). Perry played a dual purpose innings. He shared a productive 71-run second-wicket partnership with Luke Sears (38), but then had to be ever-watchful as Havant slipped from 83-1 to 124-6. His maiden unbeaten century really blossomed during an unbroken 90-run partnership with Simon Greenfield (22 not out). Perry struck the Bashley bowling to all parts of the ground, hitting two sixes and 11 fours in his best-yet scored, which guided the visitors to 214-6. Playing for the first time this season, Bashley lurched to 56-4, only to rally through fifth-wicket pair Neil Thurgood (79) and Neil Taylor (43). Spin duo Stephen Foulger (3-24) and Richard Hindley kept matters under control, but left-armer Phil Loat (3-56) achieve the vital breakthrough, taking a return catch to remove Thurgood. Havant, who have regained the services of Liphook and Ripsley all-rounder Richard Lewis, eventually restricted Bashley to 199-9. Chris Thomason was the star of B.A.T.Sports' 30-run victory over former Thames Valley club Cove, who have lost both their opening Premier Division One matches. Thomason struck a half-century and later captured four wickets as B.A.T., beaten by 18 runs at Havant last week, chalked up their first win points. Thomason (54) piloted B.A.T. to a comfortable 84-3, but watched in anguish as the off-spin of Joe Ashton (0-21 in 10 overs), coupled with a two-wicket spell by Matt Smith (2-31), eased Cove back into the game. But some lusty strikes by Dan Goldstraw (25 not out), and a supportive knock from Simon Preston (18 not out) enabled B.A.T. to recover from 91-6 and reach 162-9. While Hampshire 2nd XI left-hander James Adams (40) remained at the crease, Cove threatened. Thomason's spell of 4-18 and a tidy six-over stint by South African Frikki De Beer (2-14) turned the tide as Cove fell from 70-2 to 132 all out ... and a second consecutive defeat. Charlie Freeston took three wickets in a dramatic last over as Calmore Sports snatched a thrilling two-run win over Andover at London Road. It looked all up for Calmore, defending 164, as Mark Miller (57) and elder brother Roger (44) eased Andover to 119-2. But their middle and lower order collapsed. They needed six runs for victory off the final over, but Freeston completed a match-winning spell of 5-16 with three crucial wickets as Andover were bowled out for 162. Calmore's innings was built around Robert Budd (48) and Martin Kellaway (36) - Andy Hooper (4-30) and Mark Miller (3-18) impressive for Andover. South Wilts' visit to Burridge was called off due to an unfit outfield.
