Southern Premier League Division One - Week 1 Report
Mike Vimpany - 28 May 2000

Andover hit the ECB Southern Premier League highspots, with a 293-run mauling of South Wilts and shared opening day success with Bournemouth, Havant and Hungerford.

Mark Miller led the way as Andover produced an awesome batting display, piling up a league best 293-3 at Lower Bemerton.

Hampshire's assistant groundsman, formerly with Old Tauntonians and Romsey, hit 97 and featured in three key stands, initially with Stuart Summers (26) and then Ian Langdown (56), whose quick-fire half-century broke South Wilts' hearts.

Roger Miller (48) and Jerry Hayward, with a forceful 40 not out, continute the run flow as Andover reached their towering total - subsequently trimmed to 274 by a three-over bad light interruption.

Russell Rowe (32) got South Wilts away to a flying start, but a tight ten-over spell by Andy Hooper (2-27) slowed the pace.

New Zealander Glen Allpress hit 56 not out as South Wilts closed at 186-6.

Havant bounced back from their ECB Championship thrashing by Calmore Sports to beat strongly fancied BAT Sports by 18 runs.

Havant's victory was based on a well constructed 85 by Andy Perry and telling left-arm spin bowling by Phil Loat (3-49) and Stephen Foulger (2-24).

Perry shared a 60-run start with Richard Hindley (22) and a lively partnership with the inspirational Dominic Carson (37), which yealded 69 runs in 41 minutes.

Evergreen Terry Rawlins (3-30) chipped away, but later contributions by Paul Gover (21 not out) and Australian import Daniel Townsend lifted Havant to 225- off 50 overs.

Benefitting from the tight one-day fielding restrictions, Ian Atkins (47) produced a typically Caribbean knock - he struck three sixes and three boundaries - in a useful BAT response with the dogged Damian Shirazi (42).

Chris Thomason (25) chipped in and along with Rawlins (35 not out) and David Banks (24) kept the BAT pot boiling.

Aided by a spectacular boundary catch to remove Banks, Havant just about kept things under control as the visitors closed at 207-7.

As undefeated century by Toby Radford effectively sentenced Burridge to a hefty 106-run defeat at Hungerford, Southern League champions for the past two seasons.

Radford struck two sixes and 11 fours in a splendid 109 not out which, with support from Steve Wyatt (51) and newcomer Chris Wright (34 not out), eased Hungerford to 239-3.

Burridge were on the back foot directly David Pryke (4-22) removed Matthew Compton and Paul Hawkins.

Neil Cunningham (46) held things up, but tidy two-wicket spells by Duncan Johnson (2-21) and Kelvan Finch (2-25) sent Burridge slipping to 133 all out.

Cornwall Minor Counties all-rounder James Hands struck a maiden century as Bournemouth defeated newcomers Cove by 66 runs at Grasmere Road.

Hands, whose 103 contained only seven boundaries, and Mike Stonier (55) punished the Cove seam attack, particularly in the initial 15 overs.

Their 143-run opening partnership paved the way to Bournemouth reaching 239-6 - off-spinner Joe Ashton (3-20) being the only containing bowler.

Hampshire 2nd XI left-hander James Adams (34) guided Cove to 69-1, but a three-wicket spell by Western Australian left-armer Mark Ligtermoet (3-39) effectively nailed the Farnborough club.

Morgan Parkin bowled sharply without reward, leaving the left-arm spin of Hands (2-11) to end Cove's misery at 163 all out.

Heavy lunchtime thunderstorms washed out Calmore Sports' scheduled home match with Bashley (Rydal).
