The Yorkshire Varsity Cricket Match
Oxfam Press Release - 4 May 2000

Weds 7th June 2000, Kirkstall CC, Queenswood Road
Leeds University vs Leeds Metropolitan
50 Over a side contest:
Entarnce Free: Post Match Ball £4

Having been informed that despite 30,000 students living within 10 minutes of the ground, that Headingley weren’t interested in hosting this contest, the biggest desire of the participants in the Yorkshire Varsity Cricket Match is to prove Yorkshire CCC made a big mistake.

“There will be a general call to arms for people to make at least an hour long visit to the cricket” explained Leeds Met captain Andy Siddall. On the pitch there will be an eagerly fought contest between two sides brimming with League cricketers. Key players are Tim Mitzman No.3 plays for Cambridgeshire Minor Counties and opening bowler Pete Blackburn (Lincolnshire). All players have played for their Counties U19s at academy level. Half a dozen of the 1st 11s play in 1st div of the Bradford league? Renowned to be the strongest cricket league in the country. Were at semi finals of BUSA indoor competition and lost on a bowl-off. Currently planning a cricket tour in Sri Lanka this winter.

For Leeds University, Steve Byng played in Warwickshire County 2nds, and John Graham went from Durham Colts side into the England U 19’s. The team is in the BUSA premier league (for first time) and has exciting county prospects in their side. Take the sport seriously, but up for fun in the process.
