Southern Premier League Division 2 - Week 8 Report Mike Vimpany - 26 June 2000
Paul Marks chalked up his 5,000th Southern League run as Winchester KS crushed Alton by nine wickets to remain hot on the tails of Portsmouth at the Premier Division 2 summit. Ironically, Marks was the only Winchester wicket to fall after the city club skittled Alton for 97 - Dave Greetham and teenage Ollie Green each claiming three scalps. Winchester polished off the target, with Raj Naik (42) and Chris Stradling (36) unbeaten. But Portsmouth continue to lead the field after a rain-cut six-wicket win over United Services, whose Bangladeshi import Aminul Islam made 40 on his debut. Rob Savage (56) and Islam provided middle-order stability for US, whose 198-5 was trimmed to 183 by a rain interruption. Geoff Pike (49) shone in Portsmouth's 57-run start, leaving Paul Dew (29), Dean Oliffe (25) and Chris Moon to seal Portsmouth's win. Charles Forward (61) battled it our for Old Tauntonians and Romsey, but once Mayu Pasaputi (5-25) had swept away the remainder of the top order, victory for Liphook and Ripsley looked inevitable. Forward was the ninth batsman to be dismissed as OTRs lurched to 151 all out and an eight wicket defeat, Steve Riley's 84 not out settling matters.
