Southern Premier League Division 1 - Week 7 Report Mike Vimpany - 20 June 2000
Dan Goldstraw produced a superb spell of swing bowling to wreck Bashley (Rydal) with figures of 6-72 and sweep B.A.T.Sports back to the top of the ECB Southern Premier League. Goldstraw's season's best set up a seven-wicket for BAT, who leapfrogged Havant, held to a high scoring draw at Hungerford. Andover climed to third spot after crushing early season leaders Bournemouth by seven wickets at Chapel Gate. Goldstraw's initial new-ball spell had Bashley reeling at 2-3 and later 45-5, of which teenage West Australian Luke Ronchi hit 37. Andy Neal (31), Ian Hilsum (36) and Matt King (27) rallied as Bashley reached 160, but it was all too late to save the day. Kennedy Otieno (4) went cheaply, but Richard Kenway took the initiative, cracking 64 off 53 balls to spearhead BAT's victory charge. Chris Thomason (41*) and Ian Atkins (20*) completed the formalities in the 34th over. Dominic Carson cracked an unbeaten 124 as Havant chalked up 273-4 before being held to a draw at Hungerford, who lost two wickets in the final over but held on for a draw at 216-9. Carson and Hampshire's Jason Laney (66) provided Havant witha 132-run start before Andy Perry (25) and Luke Sears (24) helped the score along. With Steve Wyatt (88) and Toby Radford (33) established, Hungerford were a safe bet for a draw - Richard Hindley taking 4-48 as Havant tried in vain to secure a late victory. Roger Miller and Andy Hooper starred in Andover's emphatic seven-wicket victory at Bournemouth, whose relatively inexperienced side collapsed from 87-2 to 160 all out. Youngsters Tom Webley (35) and Dave Kidner (33) gave Bournemouth an encouraging start before Miller (3-35) made significant inroads. But Bournemouth were all at sea against Hooper, who took 5-34 despite bowling with a badly dislocated left middle finger. Andover suffered a double setback at 29, but a century stand between man-of-the-match Miller (63*) and Jerry Hayward (57) carried Andover to the brink of victory. Hampshire under-19 prospect Chris Benham hit 88 and off-spinner Jo Ashton took 6-25 as Cove ended their five-match losing sequence with a 121-run victory over South Wilts, who lost their last six wickets for only one run. Benham, who had barely scored double figures in his previous five innings, dictated the terms for Cove, who built their formidable 252-9 around the Farnborough youngster. Troy Tomsett (31), James Adams (25), Dave Roberts (24) and Martin Docis (20) all chipped in as Cove batted South Wilts out of the match. Roger Sillence (5-79) and Chris Steedon (3-59) worked tirelessly for South Wilts, who reached 71-0 through Jamie Glasson (47) and Russell Rowe (34). But South Wilts' problems began with the introduction of Ashton and the return of seamer Andy Audsley (3-54). They fell from 111-2 to 130-4 ... and then to 131 all out. Cove's victory has cast Burridge well adrift at the bottom - the Fareham West club grafting a draw, eight wickets down, after Calmore Sports had totalled 247-7 in 66 overs. Paul Draper (98) and Jez Goode (62) crafted a 122-run third wicket partnership for Calmore, who initially wobbled at 36-2. Burridge appeared well set at 77-1 at tea but were forced onto the defensive after the dismissal of Neil Cunningham (59) and Tom Caines (37). Mark Boston (3-63) and Paul Draper (2-23) wheeled away for Calmore, who bowled 21 overs in the final hour as Burridge clung on at 166-8.
