Southern Premier League Division 1 - Week 12 Review Mike Vimpany - 23 July 2000
Havant continued their unrelenting surge towards the ECB Southern Premier League championship with an emphatic 100-run win over Andover, the only club to have previously beaten them this season. With Luke Sears hitting an unbeaten century, Havant posted a massive 306-5 before dismissing Andover for 206. Bashley (Rydal), B.A.T.Sports and Calmore Sports also won on an afternoon when the batsmen, with a rare glimpse of sun of their backs, were allowed to shine. Hampshire's Andrew Sexton, Bournemouth's Peter Deakin and Calmore Sports skipper Martin Kellaway all hit centuries. Havant's 306-4 owed much to a league record third wicket stand of 193 between Sears (101 not out) and Paul Gover (84). They piled on the agony for Andover, who had earlier watched Dominic Carson hit 70. Andover certainly made a possitive response, with Roger Miller (54) and Ian Langdown (31) taking their reply to 143-3. Ian Williams (37) and Stuart Summers (30) kept the score ticking along, but Havant pair Richard Lewis (5-35) and Phil Loat (3-54) had the final word, bowling Andover out for 206. Martin Kellaway (105 not out) hit his first league century for two seasons as Camore Sports piled up 269-5 to beat South Wilts by 48 runs at Lower Bemerton. Kellaway arrived at the crease with Calmore 120-4 after a useful pre-lunch partnership between Tommy Pegler (48) and James Hibberd (22). The Calmore skipper and Jez Goode (500, with his third half-century in five innings, added 139 for the fifth wicket as the visitors moved into a strong position. South Wilts quickly lost Russell Rowe, but Tim Lamb (53) and Jamie Glasson (35) eased them in a promising tea-time position of 111-3. But Chris Newton, with a quick-fire 61, almost changed the game - his hoped eventually being shattered when partner Tom Hicks, the Oxford University captain, was run out at 204-6. Allan Hurst (4-58) and Paul Draper and Mark Boston, with two wickets each, ended South Wilts' prospects at 221 all out. David Banks ground out an unbeaten 76 in a three-hour stay at the crease to guid B.A.T.Sports to a four wicket win over Hungerford - their first win in three weeks. B.A.T. were reeling at 16-4 after an opening spell by David Pryke (3-29) when Banks began his sojourn at the crease, but his careful innings ensured Hungerford were toppled from second place. Duncan Johnson (3-88) chipped away, but with Ian Atkins (22), Simon Preston (20) and Richard Dibden providing support, captain Banks guided B.A.T. home. Dibden (5-55) and Terry Rawlins (3-29), took the bowling credits as Hungerford were dismissed for 152, with Steve Wyatt (33) making top score. Secton was in majestic form for Bashley, who overhauled Cove's 232-9 wth some comfort. The recent county recruit struck 21 boundaries in his 143 not out - his highest-yet Southern League score - and shared sizable stands with Neil Thurgood (55) and Graham Pardey (25 not out). Bashley took the initiative early on when Matt King (4-38) removed Sexton's couty 2nd XI team-mate James Adams (5) - the first of three catches for Australian Luke Ronchi. The well organised Chris Benham (54) and Neil Randall (25) took Cove to 74-3 before Troy Tomsett (58) and Ian Crompton (39) added 93 for the fifth wicket. King and Kevin Nash (3-27) eventually pegged Cove to 232-9 - a total Secton and friends gleefully polished off. Bournemouth ran beleaguered Burridge ragged at Chapel Gate, with teenager Tom Webley (82) and Matt Swarbrick (62) sharing a century opening partnership. The pair peppered the boundary on 19 occasions before Deakin, run out for 98 against Cove a fortnight ago, got into the act. The Dorset all-rounder struck two sixes and 12 fours in an undefeated 100b before Bournemouth declared at 276-3. Paul Hawkins and Mark Richards (41) gave Burridge a bright start, but the introduction of David Kidner (3-49) sent the relegation-bound visitors crashing to 59-3. Hawkins (76) and Matt Compton (43) added 117 for the fourth wicket, but with the match in the balance, Burridge lost their way agaisnt Joe Wilson (4-31) and played out time at 218-8. © Mike Vimpany
